The Stones do a really great version of Roll Over Beethoven from their 1970 tour - i just wish i could find a copy with great sound quality.

I am impressed with the Stones live version of Ruby Tuesday from 1967. I think it's quite an achievement to pull a song like this off effectively in a live environment while maintaining it's original qualities. It's worth remembering the Beatles stopped touring in August 1966 and were spared the task of reproducing their more elaborate songs on stage. I don't like the late

I have downloaded a whole load of live bootleg shows in recent weeks spanning the Stones whole career and i have come to the conclusion the 1972-73 live shows are my favourite - the Australian shows from early 73 being a particular favourite. Many of the songs from this period had been played live consistantly since the 69 tour but i feel they had really reached their peak at this point with som

Mike, you can download a copy of Brussels Affair off Easytree.org.

Satisfaction on the 69 tour is the best version ever. The Stones really were at a creative peak at this point being able to reinterpret older songs in a more contempory fashion. It's also another example of the really great many options Mick Taylor brought to their sound.

Midnight Rambler for me also.I don't know whether it's the changes in tempo but this song always works for me.

Mikesnaps expresses my view exactly - i don't think it reflects the Stones at their best by any means. The only thing it has though which is sadly lacking today is an air of spontanaeity.

This is another really interesting bootleg CD which is really great in places. It concentates on the Taylor era Stones and there is some nice variety in the mixture of studio outakes/alternative versions, television performances and live performances. There's that performance of Brown Sugar with Eric Clapton which was almost released in favour of the single version ( i believe) which i'

Sifting through my huge collection of Stones live bootlegs there are two albums that i have to keep coming back to - Back Strap Jacket and It's Getting Hot Up Here both from the Australian tour 1973. They really are the best of the best. For pure Rock 'n' Roll energy they even put Brussels Affair in the shade. The setlists give the shows great balance also and i feel many of thes

1331. Come On?
One song that is always neglected in the Stones catalogue is their debut single Come On. I don't think the Stones were too keen on the song at the time but i do feel it is effective in getting across their basic sound. Maybe they chose this Chuck Berry song as their first single because it was not one of his more familiar hits. Anyway it may not be the Stones at their very best but it'

The Stones really did lose something on the 75 and 76 tours. They never matched the 72/73 tours. I don't know if they lost their focus but the concerts although at times good leave a bad taste. Gimmie Shelter was definitely a highlight of the 72/73 tour and the standard of performance at this point would never be matched.

The version on It's Getting Hot Up Here is my favourite. It's credited as Perth but it's actually Sydney 73. I actually prefer the bootlegs from the Australian tour to the european tour later that same year. I wish the song had some of the raw energy these days. Lisa Fischer may sing her part well but there is something distinctly missing these days.

The Stones greatness does not come from Taylor it comes from primarily Mick and Keith's songwriting and excellent arrangements. The Stones were great before Taylor joined and on occasions after he left. What is noticeable though is they moved onto another level when he joined the group. This was partly due to the fact Mick and Keith had just entered their most inspired period beginning with

There is some resistance to admitting the Taylor era is the best even if it is blatantly obvious. I love Taylor and i love Brian Jones. I wish Brian's contribution was recognised a bit more. The Stones recorded some superb songs which he made vital contibutions to. Maybe the Stones were a little less sophisicated and consistent in Brian's day but it sure beats the post Taylor output.

I agree it is possibly the best performance on Four Flicks and probably the most consistently well played song of their career but i also feel it's a long way behind the standard set in the 70s. Mick's voice doesn't sound as good to me.

This is a great song from the sixties but i notice the later live versions seem to have more in common with the David Bowie cover in terms of arrangement than the original sixties version. Maybe the fact that it was a less typical Stones sounding single anyway (more pop) in a brief phase the Stones were going through is the reason the Stones have never tried to recreate the sound. In the US its

It's amazing how many of my favourite songs Nicky Hopkins has played on - thats aside from his work with the Stones as well. His versitility is tremendous when looking down the list of artists he has contributed - he's even played for the Bay City Rollers. Even when talking about his Stones work alone his breadth of playing is tremendous including hints of vaudeville, psychedelia, count

Unfortunately Mick's vocals lack the raw power to make Rip This Joint really effective these days. I have always thought Rip This joint was the fastest Stones song although Keith said it was Flip The Switch. She Said Yeah and Turd On The Run are both incredibly fast also.

I do think at times Ronnie has been used as a scapegoat . The quality of the Stones music had declined on It's Only Rock And Roll - before Ronnie joined although i do believe he had a hand in the title track. I also don't believe Mick Taylor would have been the Stones saviour if he had stayed. Mick may have enhanced a number of mediocre tracks on the later albums but ultimately Mick an

Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown was the first Stones single i bought and Rolled Gold the first album in around 1980. I bought the Beatles records first. I really liked them at the time but when i heard Rolled Gold i immediately preferred the Stones.

I think it is easy to dislike Ronnie - he does seem rather shallow and facile when compared to the other members of the Stones and i do believe his work with the Faces was the pinnacle of his career and very impressive at times. I have also been listening to his first solo album I've Got My Own Album To Do and it's very good. His singing is also heartfelt and convincing. I'm the

I think this is getting rather silly now. It is true over the course of his career with the Stones Ronnie may have played lead, Rhythm, electic, acoustic, maybe piano but all these instuments are conventional when compared to Brian . The sitar, marimbas, mellotron, dulcimer, flute etc are rarely heard in popular music and Brian played these as well as the more traditional instuments played by Ronni

I think it's Mick Taylor's quiet personality which also contributes to making him such a great player though. His live playing with the Stones was great partly because he was disciplined and focused and not fooling around like Ronnie in addition to having far superior technical skill.

Mick Taylor hasn't got Ronnie's outgoing aimiable personality - that's why he doesn't get invited to play with top line stars like Ronnie.

Brian was great and he broadened out the Stones sound considerably with his great musical versitility. The great thing about Brian is he brought great variety to the Stones sound which greatly enhances their output. It's also more difficult to compare the value of a sitar, flute or melletron solo with that of a guitar. The reason he is not mentioned too much with regard to the Taylor/Wood de

I know exactly what Open G is getting at and i agree with him totally. When Mick Taylor left, the Stones lost a very important aspect to their music. Many of his solos were truly breathtaking not just a means to filling gaps in different songs. Of course the Stones have performed some great concerts since but there's always that vital element missing. Obviously the Stones were great before
