Haha, Stone Age was a pretty lame collection.

Quoteexilestones photo by Art Zelin - Year unknown? Pretty sure that's '73 near the time of the Australian tour when he had his hair cut short (it became longer later in '73 around the European tour). His shirt and that woman's hair is very '70s too.

I was thinking about this a while ago, about how for instance Pink Floyd (Roger Waters) has called some of their circa-1969 albums "crap", and how Black Sabbath hates the guts out of Never Say Die, even though fans mostly like it (?), which is probably mostly because they had such a lousy time making it. Rock history is full of albums being hated by their own creators. Yet I can'

Of course they could afford to have a small group of roadies and technicians set up a real grand piano every show, but they probably don't think it's worth it. IMHO, it would be nice if they did the Elton John thing and used a digital grand piano just to make it look better and more worthy on stage. Heck, Nicky Hopkins played an upright piano the whole '72 tour and it sounded

QuoteGasLightStreet A few that don't have an actual chorus... Summer Romance Shattered She's So Cold Hang Fire Neighbours I wonder if they made more songs like that during the punk era, or if you just happened to choose those as examples. I agree that many 2 chord songs are boring, but the Stones managed to make some pretty good ones. Of the above, I think She's So Cold

Quotetatters I watched it yesterday. What I found particularly sad and depressing is that he doesn't seem to even have gotten much enjoyment from his successes. A very well-made film, though I tend to get distracted by the little things. Like there's a scene filmed in a record company office where someone appears to be talking on the phone about how best to promote the new Derek and the

I remember hearing the Ya-Ya's version of Stray Cat Blues years ago and being a little disappointed at how slow it was, as I was expecting the fast and raunchy Banquet style. But I was intrigued by it, and now I love it. I think the old and slow live version is better than later and faster live versions of Stray Cat. The one at Hyde Park '69 is pretty cool.

It's been discussed here before, but definitely deserves more attention. Yeah, that instrumental definitely feels like Wild Horses, Next Goodbye, Winter, Plundered My Soul and Watching the River Flow.

I love how Mick goes "We're gonna do one for you which we just, uh ... we just, uh ... you've never heard it before 'cause we've just - written it!" -- supposedly because they weren't legally allowed to record in the US during the time of Muscle Shoals sessions, for Musician's Union related reasons. According to Stanley Booth. I wouldn't have thought m

Bianca didn't spend much time in the studio with the Stones, as Yoko did with the Beatles. That's one big difference the springs to mind. As 24FPS says, she wasn't involved artistically with Mick like Yoko was with John. In a way, Anita was more like a Yoko than Bianca, but I haven't seen many pics of her in the studio with the Stones either. As far as Keith and Mick dri

Yes, definitely not '73. I'm thinking '74, though? Mick Taylor had pretty long hair at that time, and Keith's was shorter than in '73. The scarf is the same as this one (Rockman's avatar image), I think: But now I'm starting to think that's the same scarf as he had so much in '72: And in '75! And '76! Talk about w

I checked this outtake: And the Taylor guitar is definitely the same there, and I reckon it's the same Taylor guitar on all available versions. Not sure if the little solo at the end is the same guitar as the rest of the song, but my guess is that he just cranked it up a bit there. Could be another take mixed in, though.

QuoteMathijs QuoteDandelionPowderman I reckon he means the out of phase-sound Taylor had on this song. Sort of Leslie-sounding (aka Hammond). It's the Gibson ES-355 with the Varitone switch in 3rd or 4th position, giving this quacky out of phase sound. Mathijs I agree it sounds like that hollow out of phase position (similar to the slide lead on Stop Breaking Down), but I think it

QuoteDandelionPowderman QuoteLieB That Taylor track is interesting - so much there that you can't really hear in the master mix. But for example at 0:28 in the clip, there's definitely a familiar part that cuts through in the master. I agree it has a calypso feel to it with a lot of major notes. As I wrote in the other thread (thinking it was this thread), I kinda wish Mick T's

Lovely stuff! I can't believe how much there is to discover in this song. The Mick T line has some many cool major key notes that aren't audible in the master mix. I sort of wish his contribution to this song would have been bigger, even though it's perfection already. And the background vocals sound awesome - I love Keith's harmony there - incredible.

I think the material should be released as long as it's not complete crap (and we know this isn't). It's a little silly with all these 12 track studio "albums" though... the historical context is vague. I love First Rays of the New Rising Sun, but the ones that have come after are a little random.

QuoteMonsoon Ragoon All concerts except one Coventry and one Roundhouse show (and Leeds/Marquee) are lost/unrecorded. There are more audience tapes available from 1967 (!). And 80-90 % of the 1969, 70, 72 tours is available as well. Probably it has to do with the small size of the 1971 venues - small hall, less or not recording(s). I'm said this before, but according to Bill Wyman, "T

Quotekeefriff99 Quotewonderboy Well, sure you will have to pay for content. I used to work for a newspaper; one of the reasons newspapers are failing is that they put their content online for free. Interestingly, Aerosmith's Pump album had less contributions from outside songwriters than both its predecessor Permanent Vacation and its successor Get A Grip had -- while also having more creds to Whitford and Hamilton -- and guess what -- it's a better album too. Their last album could have been more like that, had they dropped like half of the songs from it...

Quotekeefriff99 Quote24FPS Slow.............. I've never heard a great version of this wonderful song live. To do it right takes a lot of vigor, as it's a relentless song. Charlie also played a two-handed 16th note rhythm on the hi hat on the original...that gave the song a lot of drive and an exotic feel. Not to downplay Charlie's role, but the studio track also has other p

We're so used to this song now, but when you think about it, it's impressive how "right" they got everything in it. The catchy chords and melodies, super hip disco bass line, 4 on the floor rhythm and electric piano, and with a great romanic Jagger lyrics, while not sacrificing any of the Rolling Stones style. No wonder it became a hit and a warhorse. And no wonder it fared wa

Brian was going downhill for sure, and Keith was no flower child, but I don't think the Stones were all that much worse with the drugs than the Beatles around 1967. They did have problems with the busts though. The Beatles obviously had a better creative flow at that time - very ambitious and focused. Three years later, tables had turned. You can't separate the musicians personal liv

Just listened to this release on Spotify. My two grumpy cents: Very uneven. The opening non-Sticky numbers sound nice and raunchy. The Sticky Fingers songs really shine at times, but sound sloppy at other times. Tempos are too fast some times and too slow at other times. I think Mick is the one who performs consistently really well. Overall, Ronnie outshines Keith, IMHO. * Sway - a fine ver

Good points there, matxil. To elaborate on what I wrote ... I guess the big bands and artists that weren't "pure" punk or played other music with large doses of punk in were are the ones that people still love today. The Clash is one of those. Iggy Pop another, I suppose, although he could also be considered an older artist who -- just like the Stones -- inspired the punks and w

I think they had a big impact on the rock artists of the day, but disappeared relatively quickly from the scene, or? Today, almost nobody listens to punk, but everybody has good things to say about them, it seems.
