Nice work. Record Retailer was always a bit of a weird choice as latterly "the official" chart. I'm not sure if any bands or fans took any notice of it at the time compared to NME or Melody Maker for example. The only reason I grudgingly accept it is because Johnny Kidd and The Pirates got a number 1 for Shakin' All Over on that chart. The mop-heads were quite surprised to

Quotebleedingman I've never understood how the phrase "slept with" replaced "had sex with". Very often there is no "sleeping" involved (or so I've heard). It's like saying "My dog 'went to the bathroom' on the rug." _______________________________________________________________________________ That's all I got. We have

Quote24FPS Quoteovalvox There are plenty of Beatle concerts filmed in good quality from start to finish. Why no Stones concerts? Just clips here and there. That's a good question. Of course the Stones were nowhere near the Beatles during those first couple years of Beatlemania, when everything the Fab Four did was recorded. I just watched an Australian Beatles concert on YouTube last

October 1962 Curly Clayton acetate in full 1963 Crawdaddy reel to reel sold at auction (to Mick?) March 18th 1964 Radio Luxembourg session from Bill's acetate. All of the unedited Musicorama shows 64 to 67 (not sure whether 1964 still exists). All the acetates if Jagger / Richards etc.. compositions form late 63, early 64 plus It's Over from Feb 1964.

Quoteironbelly Quotejlowe Why the disappointment at the exclusion of Radio Luxembourg tracks? It was always going to be a BBC record. Just wondered, did The Stones ever do anything on 'Pirate radio' (UK Off shore) in the late sixties? The main reason is the rumored set list. According to Nico's site it looks like this Apparently, these tracks in these particular versions are

Quoteironbelly I am surprised that somebody actually expect audiophile quality for BBC recordings. Given the absence of the original tapes (for the most part) I'm not sure anyone truly expects audiophile quality. However the snippet posted here - sounds (in the words of PT) flipping lousy. The iTunes preview sounds much better but why have they put up such a crap sounding version on t

The clip on the Facebook page posted upthread sounds dreadful. The iTunes sample sounds much better than that. They are from different parts of the song though. I will give it a go. Long wait till December 1st !

QuoteDeltics Quoteash Apparently fake stereo reverb applied to the available preview track on iTunes. Not a comprehensive set, better than nothing. If they don't have any new sources it won't be better than the very recent fan-made set but at least it's some kind of recognition for the Jones-era. I do hope they haven't messed with the other tracks too much. How can we get t

QuoteLien That looks a bit different from the iTunes track list. Bit more comprehensive so that's a plus. Looks like they've taken the track info from the book. See my earlier posts for the correct date for Ain't That Loving You Baby and others.

As it says a BBC recording on the sleeve I wonder if it will consist entirely of BBC sessions. I would hope they'd include everything possible regardless of sound quality which 2 cds suggests they might unless it is bulked out with French radio recordings. I would hope even more that perhaps they've managed to get either upgraded sources or even some of the currently missing tracks, esp

Quotefloodonthepage I have yet to buy the mono box, though I've been on the verge many times. For me, considering that their last release to be issued in Mono was 'Satanic Majesties' (right?), I feel like the thing to do is to buy the albums up through Majesties individually (whenever those finally come out) and leave my BB and LIB as the SACDs from 2002. Of course, I would miss

Interesting post. Can someone tell me why those two (12x5 and Big Hits High Tide) are worth so much. Is that for a promo version ? The maroon unboxed mono 12x5 seems to be widely available ....is there a special version this refers to or did the $10,000 one include a free Brian Jones.

Quoteslew I'm not a fan of mono. Can someone tell me the attraction? Why not Slew ? I wouldn't listen to everything in mono but some things are either only available in mono (Stones debut) or were made to be heard in mono (Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper) just as some things are only available in stereo (Exile) and meant to be heard in stereo (Let It Bleed, Beggars). Mono was the first marke

QuoteHomerSimpson Anyone have anything positive to say about this book? It's been sitting on my table still shrink wrapped since Tuesday while I debate what to do with it. Any reason to keep it? If I hadn't known the correct details for their BBC radio sessions and a bit more about the TV appearances I would have enjoyed reading it and assumed it was the last word in that area. I us

Good also produced the Billy Fury 1960 album "The Sound Of Fury". Though it has dated, it is basically a British rock n roll album and every track is written by Fury. The drummer is Andy White (of Love Me Do fame) and Joe Brown plays some great rockabilly guitar. It also features two bass players. Joe said they didn't know how they got the great slap bass sound on Elvis et al recor

Great post Deltics, I have read many of Jack Good's columns from that period. By and large he was pretty spot on iirc. When his show Wham ended that was pretty much it for UK pop TV shows for several years with the exceptions of Discs A Go Go and Thank Your Lucky Stars which both began in 1961 but were mimed. He branched out into record production with Charles Blackwell at Decca, did Around

I posted this at the Hoffman board. I hope it's ok to duplicate the post. Jack Good was a massive and pivotal figure in British music in the years before The Beatles and The Stones. Without him, British pop music would have been a whole lot different and arguably without him, that all-important wave of British Beat Groups might never have happened...... It's reported that Jack Good h

I wish I could say you're welcome but it's very disappointing. If someone nominated me to do it properly I'd insist the band include a cd of the March 1964 Radio Luxembourg acetate that Bill apparently owns. Do ABKCO have a claim on that ? Even if my book turned out to be crap it'd be worth it for the cd!!!

As noted, the On Air book completely omits the 17th November 1968 Top Gear where Mick and Keith turned up to provide intros for each song with presenter John Peel. The album was played in full. I've only sped-read On Air so apologies if I missed this in the book. It would seem like a significant show to mention even if no live music was played. (my fave Stones album too for what it's w

No proper blurb yet, just the bare bones but this is where I'm at Stones-wise. This info is direct from the BBC programme as broadcast sheets (pasb) compiled for every single BBC broadcast and stored broadly in broadcast order for the entire history of the corporation. I have more than double checked this info. If there's an error it's my own dumb fault or a typo ! TX means transmi

The reason I know all this stuff is because I've been writing a book on BBC Radio sessions for the last few years covering the period 1958 to 67. I made the decision early on to check everything, even re-checking Mark Lewisohn's Beatle work which is incidentally of the highest order. Sadly, previous Stones authors did not check the BBC programme logs thoroughly and subsequent books have

I've bought the Kindle book which has turned out to be disappointing in terms of the research. Sure it's a nice looking book but the author has not checked the BBC documentation relating to the songs played on various BBC sessions thus repeating mistakes from Badman et al. Extremely disappointing given that the author appears to have gone to the BBC Written Archive to look through the
