POST: Mick Taylor Alligator Alley 18.08.2000

Mick Taylor at "Alligator Alley"
Sunrise, Fl.
8-18-2000

Lineup:
MT: gtr/voc
Max Middleton: keyboards
Robert Awai: bass
Martin Ditchum: drums

Excellent audience

This is what the taper had to say about the show:

Mick calls this "The Jetlag Show" as he had JUST returned to the USA, from England, via Chicago - that's a hell of a flight! Though he says that he's tired, Mick was in great spirits and delivered another great show. He was also as funny as hell. Second guitarist Robert Awai played bass because the regular guy wasn't with them. Not only did he play well, but there wasn't any "obligatory" bass solos which I can do without. Drummer Martin Ditchum forced premature endings on "Losing My Faith" and "Blind Willie McTell", which really pissed off Mick - he came in way too soon to end the songs. It was plenty obvious to me at the time, but I don't think the audience noticed it at all. On playback it's still obvious. So... when it happened at the end of "Blind Willie McTell", Mick finished before the band and made a move to throw his guitar. He grabbed it by the neck, faced away from the crowd, and threw it while it was still strapped to himself. The strap held, so it kind of jerked him. Then he unstrapped it and threw it spear-style, heavy end first, to the back of the stage (to our left). It flew latterally about 12 feet, and then down about 6 feet, and landed below stage level - this was a serious throw!
The band finished up the ending and Mick thanked the stunned crowd.

Yes indeed, I taped the two shows afterwards, now missing in action or in storage,
I will be lucky to ever find them again. But it was a great run, Clearwater Club More and Jaxville Beach at the Freebird Cafe, Ronnie Van Zant's widow owns the placeand she tends bar. Grahamn Parker even entitled a song or the entire CD "Never Going Back to Jacksonville" talking about what a dump it was LOL!! I have photos of itsomewhere, here again, Im living out of a cardboard box but will post them someday. The thing is/was Jaxville Beach is the perfect place for a true bluesman to play.Mick had to have some serious inspiration, the town was empty, the club mostly had the same drunk 50 cent draft beer guys in the place that live in there and did not know the greatest living Rolling Stone was on. I mean there were like 50 people in the place about 15 knew who was playing and what was going down. One good ole boy broke out his harmonicee and thought he's give Mick a hand from 10 rows back, now isn't that nice LOL!! But what came out of this is the most spookie, eerie Boogie Man I have ever, heard. It was the best. No doubt about it. That I have on cassette, one day I will make a dub and offer it to someone to make discs out of. I hate tracking DAT tape, its a pain in the ass no matter what. Micks last comments were "It's Sunday you really ought to be in church", well, no matter what he signed his first LP and a Mayall Bluesbreaker Italian import for me. Times have been hard but I can not imagine parting with these two but I may someday, thanks for posting, oh well looks like I'm gonna waste some more time downloading this one, its the only one of that run I do not possess. Thanks Bro!!!

Great story. Mick Taylor is a real gent. It's a pity he isn't drawing the crowds that he should be because his playing is still top notch. Love to hear your Mick Taylor shows if you ever get round to uploading them here. In the meantime, enjoy the vibrato!

2nd that wish.

Also want to agree with terraplane about the top notch thing.

Man; I've heard l-o-a-d-s thru my active 30-35 years as a concert goer...
But the Taylor gig in Stockholm Dec 2005 was of a remarkable quality.
