Thanks adotulipson and scottkeef. Yeah, I have the S.F. 6/6/72 1st cdr dubbed 'Thank You For Your Wine California' but according to the website a recording of the 2nd show exists as well. I thought that was the show where they apparently segued into 'Let It Rock' during the encore and no recording of it existed.

With respect to K.C. and Nashville, perhaps it is the same recording. I think I listened to the show that purports to be K.C. a while back and not only was it such poor sound quality that it was difficult to detect any markers but there were edits in between every song which, again, would have excised any banter or references to the city.

are the two sb tracks (supposedly that Bill Graham aired?) from SF 6-8-72 from the 1st show?

Yeah, according to the STP box set, those two songs are from 6/8/72 (or 8/6/72 if you like), while the VGP title 'Midnight Magic' is 6/8/72 2nd show. It's 6/6/72 2nd show, two days earlier, that I'm still curious about ie. does a recording exist of it ?

Those tracks are sb? The sounded like audience recordings to me. They could be very rough sb recordings but I'll have to go check.

Is there a definitive list of the shows from 72 that have seen the light of day and more pertinent revues of them , I have heard some excellent stuff over the years, and some very poor.
The band on the whole played well on that tour , just that some of the recordings have not survived as well as others.
We are of course discussing a tour from 37 years ago, so we should not expect perfection.
It would however be great to know what was available and in what quality

Well let's start the definitive 72 tour thread, with pics, memories and bootleg reviews.

Good idea. We should have included bootleg reviews in the great '75 tour thread over on Tell Me.

I've listened to 'em all from 72. IMHO 'Ahmet Artegun Thank You Kindly' from Ft Worth is by far the best recording of that tour. Some Philly stuff is ok but overall the Philly sound is too inconsistent. I had high hopes for the LaG soundtrack which surfaced but it is too tinny and the drums mixed way too far right. Keiths guitar solo isnt loud enough on Bitch on it, either. AATYK has decent, not muddy bass and the guitars are to the fore, and Charlies wallop more centered. That's my pick for #1 for 72.

I know many do not like Sister Morphine releases, but I thought Lone Star Shooters was clearer than Ahmet Ertegun... though I have not listened in a while since my hard drive ate some of the Lone Star Shooters songs.

- That one I haven't heard. maybe somebody can post it?? The Ahmet TYK version is pretty clear, and the bass punchy and not distorted and rumbly (to my ears, anyway). Guitars nicely separated and pretty even in the mix, although MT could b louder in some spots. (YCAGWYW and Dont Lie To Me). If there are any cleaner, clearer versions I'd love to hear them. (MP3 as I havent figured out how to convert flac yet). I aint no computer wizard..

The version on Rattlesnakes STP is nice but I never heard any disc with noticable improvement over Turd On The Runs version myself.

What about the WORST 72 show for a change : my vote goes to Akron ;-)

Do you mean performance or recording? My Akron cdr is pretty good(at least avg for 72)

I mean performance... I can live with a rough tape but I'd rather not have to many off-nights in my collection. RE the 72 shows compare Akron with the 2 fantastic Toronto gigs ;-)

I see what you mean. Some tapes are so bad though you cant tell if it was a good show or not! I have a 3rd gen Dallas 69 tape and you can barely tell theres a concert going on!

One question about Philly. Do you know the boot "Can you hear the encore?" - is this the audience of Philly 21 - 1st show?
Do you know if it's complete? I still miss the last 5 tracks, from Midnight rambler to SFM, and somewhere I read they are in poor audio quality on this CD.

Good lord! Akron is one of the very best of the tour!

Sadly, no matter how good or bad the actual performance, poor quality recordings are useless and not worth listening to, IMHO. That is why, in reality, from the 72-73 tour there are really only a couple of shows/recordings worth listening to at all, (Brussels Affair and either You Cant Do That Baby or Thank You Kindly Ahmet Artegun). And pretty much none from the 75 tour; they all sound horrible. '78 has Handsome Girls which is excellent soundwise and is great because it features bare-bones, stripped down aggressive playing without all the ridiculous and foolish accompanyment ala Billy Preston, and many of the shows are real rock and roll workouts in smaller venues. I mean the back and forth between Woody and Keith on Miss You in Fort Worth in the 78 recording is what it is all about. After that tour, though, I don't like any Stones tours, really, because that is when the circus act began and Jagger was more into being a banker than anything else, and Woody's playing began to suck pretty bad.

After listening to many of the shows from 1969, 1972, and 1975 IMO, the 69 and 75 tour are the best with 72 coming in 3rd.

I am leaning to the 1975 tour as best of the bunch.

What do you expect from shows taped over 30 years ago with crude cassettes in most cases? If you can't see thru that minor crap then you can't appreciate music history.

Among LOTS of good 75 recordings there is the Millard tape of LA 7-13-75 which is considered by many as THE BEST AUD RECORDING OF ALL TIME. Man, its in the stratosphere of Aud tapes!
