Semi-OT: Songs that you wish continued playing forever
Posted by: JMoisica ()

Listening to Tumbling Dice from Brussels '73, I kept on hoping the song would never end, and they'd just keep on playing. The combination of Keith's rhythm, the horns, and of course Taylor's guitar make the whole thing sublime. That made me think of other tunes that I listen to, and hope that they would just play on forever:

Sweet Virginia and Loving Cup (something about those Exile tunes)
and also,
The Byrds version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"
and
U2's live version of "Bad." That's just a start. Any other's come to mind?

Just a thought for a Sunday night.

They just start the "jam" part and Taylor goed of on his solo and then it already fades out. A shame!

Cheers,

Nice thread!

Yes, Tumbling Dice - but rather the studio album. Still, that is THE song I always hoped would go on and on and on.

I could take two more minutes of the end choral of YCAGWYW

Waiting on a friend; Sonny, keep playing!

Bitch. That one must gather speed until becoming a gorgeous trainwreck.

Yes, and for me the studio verison too. at the very End Bobby starts playing the sax, I wish they let the track go further so we can hear where they were going with that.

I like the Woodstock rehearsal of Beast of Burden, where they keep the groove going.

I've often said they should do an entire concert of nothing but that.

Which Live version? I like the one from Live Aide.

My sings would include:

Midnight Rambler - live
How Many More Times - live LZ
Jungleland - live Bruce
Ramble Tamble - CCR
Jump Into the Fire - Nilsson

I think The Stones have been always masters in deciding the lenght of the songs (studiowise), how many verses include, when and how to fade out, etc. I think the endings of certain songs mentioned here ("The Last Time", "Little Red Rooster", "Stray Cat Blues", "Bitch"...) are great examples of fading in an absulutely right moment: in a moment the listener is still excited, and hungry for more, and feels a bit like teased or disappointed for too 'early' bye-bye, but if it would have continued longer he/she might get bored... The Stones are teasers, really.

I always thought it was a crime that the fantastic end of "God only knows" by the Beach Boys (of course) only lasts about 30 or 40 seconds. It should have gone on for one or two minutes at least, forever would have been even better.

The same is true for Tom Waits' (and Keith Richards' ;-) ) "That Feel". Fades out much too soon

not a band that often goes into "jam mode" - but it has been done to great effect on some tunes mentioned on this thread - tumbling dice and out of control being a couple of my fave examples. unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work so well on the warhorses they typically choose to elongate on stage these days...

Ahh, this a great question. I was originally referring to Bad from Wide Awake In America, but the Bad from Live Aide is an epic. Also noteworthy are the '87 Joshua Tree version from Syracuse and 1984 from Dortmund, and the one from Rattle and Hum.

Also: (how could I forget!): Ooh La La. Wish that played on forever too.

yeah, but in 3 of these cases, the songs already go on forever. you're a hard man to please....and I thought about letting you know.

Tangled Up In Blue, I'd like him to write about 1000 verses more.
And the last 30sec of YCAGWYW is too short!

10min When the Whip... is nice.

The problem with the question "Songs that you wish continued playing forever "is that I didn't understand it.
Did JMoisica mean songs that you can play over and over again? or songs that has no end and you wish that they never stop?
First of all I came up with Stay Cat Blues because I can listen to this song over and over again. Then I saw someone mentioned CCR Ramble Tamble a song that sounds monotone but for me it can play forever........
So I name some songs that sound monotone but for me they can go on for ever...............

B.t.w. 3 of these cases what is the 4rth
