Just heard on the radio that the very wonderful Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops has passed away. [news.bbc.co.uk] I'm going away now to listen to "Reach Out" and leave you with Billy Bragg's tribute:
R.I.P. Levi and thanks

RIP Levi. I was actually just listening to Reach Out I"ll Be There on the way to work this morning. Love the Four Tops. Sugar Pie Honey Bunch, Baby I Need Your Loving, etc.
The Four Tops were truly one of the greatest Motown Acts.
So glad, that I've seen them in 1989 in their orginal line-up: Abdul Fakir + Levi Stubbs + Renaldo Benson († 2005) + Lawrence Payton († 1997) in a great concert show.
Very sad news...man, his voice was like a volcanic eruption filled with tons of heart and soul. One of the greatest of all time, he will be missed. Rest In Peace Mr. Levi.
Baby I Need Your Loving ... Ask The Lonely ...Shake Me Wake Me.. It's The Same Old Song ... Bernadette ...Loving You Is Sweeter than Ever.. Standing In The Shadows Of Love ... Walk Away Renee ... Reach Out I'll Be There
Rest well Levi...You gave so much
Lawrence Payton .................. Levi Stubbs ..................Renaldo Benson .............. Abdul Fakir..
The headline re Levi Stubbs made me so sad I couldn't read the obituary.
I will always remember on my first trip to London where I read an article by my friend Penny Valentine, a great writer on the music scene, extolling the virtues of Stubbs.
I knew that I loved the best of the Motown Sound but I didn't know how important it was then. Penny made it crystal clear.
