Flat, generic, by-the-numbers cover. A letdown after the pulsating energy of the album's opening track. Like I said in another post, the Stones should stick with playing their own stuff, not covers.

Which leads me to remember that they started out as a cover band ... it seems to me they were much better and more inventive at covering other people's work until they realized they could write their own stuff!!

Forced. Never liked it. Live dud too. They did much better with "Imagination" a few years later.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer the Stones version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." Howling Mick - I love it.

I also much prefer the Stones version w/ Mick belting out the lyrics!

What's Keith playing on this? It's got a nasty growl and seems to be in standard tuning. The Les Paul Jr. with the P-90?

I would say so -it's that growling sound he had during these '74/'75 sessions. It's the same sound as on Slave, which I think is the Junior with the Boogie MkI prototype they recieved for the sessions.

Mathijs

Mathjis: I remember at the time reading in one of those rock mags that KR and MT were using "black boxes" for their guitar effects for the IORR sessions. There are some unusual guitar sounds on the record (IYCRM, ATPTB and others). I was wondering if you know anything about this.

Rene,

You asked for comments.

Your post gives three separate recording dates but one fixed list of personnel.

I'm surprised if Mick T wasn't at one of those sessions.

Your list says: K Richards : guitar.

But there's more than one guitar on it isn't there?

So shouldn't it either be K Richards: guitars or an extra credit for Mick T?

Don't think MT made the session, as he was indisposed. Keith doubled methinks.

One of the rare tracks whose studio version is far better than any live performance. The solo from Keith is great and gives this cover a more aggressive style than the original version. Unfortunately the Bigger Bang live versions are very lame.

Taylor on backing vocals. With a stethoscope only.

not sure if i'd go so far as to say i prefer the stones' version to the tempts'....but i do think they did a very credible job...and on JMI, too....

i love being in the minority, though, as a general rule....so maybe that has sumpin' to do with it....

Really? Never heard it live, but the studio Stones version is my number one boring Stones song without any competition.

The Acetates version of ATPTB is far superior to the IORR version.

I too think the studio version is seriously kick ass! Even though a cover, it has always been my favorite track off the album.

No, you're right, the guitar work, especially Keith, is terrible; bad, thin sound, a mess of instruments,a stumbling rhythm; an indisposed Amy is the best on stage beside Mick, that's saying something!

Still can't get the studio version right. Are you all sure that the BIG guitar is not open g (the other is, of course, standard)?

I happen to like it, both studio, and the live versions from LA Friday and Light The Fuse.

I also like the original Temptations version.

There was a rumour that the Its Only Rock n Roll album was going to be half covers and half originals, and that the Stones did Drift Away, Shame Shame Shame, as covers.

One of their best covers, the other one is Imagination. The video is awsome, too with different great Mick vocal. [url=http://

the Stones' version would be better if it didn't sound as if it were recorded in an airtight chamber.

Exactly. 100% right.

Keith must have felt the same way. In an interview right after the album came out he said something about "..f--kin' Dolbys!"

I like the breakdown in the middle. A little touch like that would go a long way to helping out some of the recent tunes like say, Doom and Gloom or She Saw Me Coming.

I don't feel they took the song seriously enough, and in particular the singing on the chorus is a little too lazy. Not their finest Motown cover by a long shot.

Nice cover tune - the guitars are great (which sets this apart from the original) as are Mick's snarly vocals.
But as with 99% of Stones cover tunes, the original is superior.

Guess it's all a matter of taste. Personally, I'd rather hear the Stones version of ATPTB than the original. Same with Just My Imagination....but I prefer rock to soul, that's just me.

AIN'T TO PROUD TO BEG
(Holland/Whitfield)

I know you wanna leave me, but I refuse to let you go
If I have to beg, plead for sympathy
I don't mind, 'cause it means that much to me

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me, don't you go
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, don't you go

Well I heard a quiet man is half a man, with no sense of pride
If I have to cry to keep ya I don't mind weepin'
If weepin' gonna keep ya by my side

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me, don't you go
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, don't you go

If I have to sleep on your doorstep all night and day
Just to keep you from walkin' away
Let my friends laugh, for this I can stand
'Cause I wanna I keep ya, yeah, yeah, I can

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me, don't you go
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, don't you go

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me, don't you go
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, don't you go

I got a love so deep in the pit of my heart
Ev'ry day it grows more and more
I'm not ashamed to come and plead with you, baby
If pleadin' keeps you from walkin' out the door

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me, don't you go
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, don't you go

I love this version; I think it's not only a highlight on IORR but also a version that could fit in handily now, or almost any other time in their great lexicon. It's been kind of under-rated or even smugly dismissed by some fans.
The song itself is a powerhouse of brilliance. The Stones version has amazing guitar work between the two. Very simple and direct but as powerful as ACDC power chords, but more refined (or compressed?) The tone, feel, interplay, the true 'weaving' of these monstrous chords left and right is thrilling. Wyman Watts are Wyman Watts and making it all tight but rolling.
There is another "official" vid of them lip syncing and prancing around in Ronald McDonald costumes with Mick made up like a woman that distracts me from the track itself; it doesn't need that kind of eye candy tho its oh so flash...(Keith wears a nice modest elegant suit to the proceedings however.) thumbs up. This vid is meant just for the sound of the track and has the iorr cover as the visual.

You think it's filler? Or a great rendition worthy of inclusion in any really good Rolling Stones album. I mean if the next one opened up with something like this wouldn't you just rave about it?

Love this track. This was the first track I heard where I realized at the age of 14 I knew the sound of the Stones without hearing Mick's vocals. I switched on the radio one night in 1974 and heard for the first time Keith's guitar solo in this track and thought, "This must be new Stones music!" Those licks, Charlie's beat; it could only be the Stones. I still get a rush whenever I hear it!
