Dirty Work Era B&W Promo Poster / 1986ish?
Posted by: silverstones69 ()
Date: August 11, 2008 06:34

Would anyone have any information at all that you could share about a promotional poster that came out around the time of Dirty Work?

It is a 1986? B&W photo of the Stones from around chest up. Very Very Cool.

I have one on display in my loungeroom, but was interested to know if anyone has seen these on EBAY lately? or if any one knows the value of this poster?.

I heard many years ago that this was a fairly rare / small print run of promo poster, specifically shot for CBS Records to commemorate a new contract? I could be way off, but only remember this story from 20 years ago?

If anyone can give me a bit more information on this item as to why it was photographed specially & its approximate value, I would appreciate your help very much.

Thanks very much.

Silverstones69.

# When I had my unit on sale a couple of years ago, easily 98% of people who came thru to view, made comment on how awesome the guys looked & how great the poster looked. I know that most of those people would never even own a Stones record, so it was good to hear such good comments from non fans as well as fans.

[eil.com]

Is it this one you're talking about?

Looks 80s-ish to me, though I can't tell if it's exactly from 86.

No - sorry Rollingmanu.

That is one heck of a mighty cool poster though, that one is more 1978-1980 if I had to guess. I have not actually seen that one before. Very nice.

I wish I could show the image of the one I am referring to, it is along similar cool B&W style to that one, but sometime around 85/86 I am pretty sure.

It is a close group photo from chest up & of the 5 x faces with a very stylish shot of all 5 Stones.

Thanks for helping out Rollingmanu.

Cheers.

Thanks Rockman, that's it! - you are champs!!!

Any other info you may have to go with it at all?

I have never seen anyone advertise one since I nabbed one from a mate in Brisbane mid 80's who had a couple.

I've had so many people ask me about it over the years - friends, party guests & thieves, that I thought I would try to find out a little bit more about it.

Cheers Rockman.

If I had a $ for every person who wanted it / tried to nick it from my wall over the last 20 years, I would dead set be retired by now & living alongside Mick in Mystique! Well almost!!

This one is a bit of a mystery for me, have not seen 1 turn up since 80's & I have more posters than any other Stones collectable in my stash.

Thanks again mate.

Agreed loog droog.

DW would have gone multi platinum on the cover alone if that was the case.

Please don't go there on the music though - A big fan of "Dirty Work" here - great sound!!! & yes, even Back To Zero & Winning Ugly.

Gotta be allowed my Stones vices!

back to that gorgeous photo for a minute: it's by Annie Leibovitz.
from 85 or 86 - not sure which.

the shot therollingmanu gave a link to - [eil.com] - is by Ken Regan, and it's from 1977 -
pretty clearly september 1977, the same timeframe as the Love You Live promo party

That link, that's obviously the Black And Blue era - Mick looks all girly.

The one on here though - that is the one that came out with the Dirty Work hype. And it would have made a hell of a lot better cover than how Dirty Work is.

Oh, just one bit here - Dirty Work is their LAMEST album title EVER. And their lamest album cover.

Dirty Work is their (...) lamest album cover.

Not by a mile, did you notice the covers that followed?

The Dirty WOrk cover could had been better though - but the 80s style wouldn't allow it

thank you. I would have put it into the undercover era, keith just doesn't look like 77 at all to me there.

Exactly. What an awesome album cover this would have been. So 80´s but in a stylish way.

Anyone ever seen anything else from this photoshoot??
There are a few subtle things that lead me to believe that
this was not a straightforward "group photo" but possibly
"layered..."super-imposed"..."photo-shopped"..or whatever term
would've been relevant for 1985-6. A series of other out-take
images might prove me wrong.

I loved that poster too. When I went to a DIRTY WORK "sneak-preview"
at a record store..they had a few on the wall that I tried to purchase
without luck.

I have seen them pop up on eBay.

One of the hints.....the direction of the light source.
It is consistent with each member but if it were all one shot,
Keith's left side (as we view it) would be more in shadow (cast by Mick)....and
Ronnie even more so (cast by Mick, Charlie & Bill. And Bill & Charlie look like they were inserted
for compositional reasons. What do you think?

That is a great shot. I agree it would have made a great cover for Dirty Work. I like (most of the album) and the album title, but that cover they used ... man, that was bad.

from VGP, but seen it before....don't know the credits

Too Tough - you found it! The one of Mick being a total girl! HA HA!

I meant their lamest for LPs. As in albums. Their singles - ugh - they've got some awful singles covers.
