Keith's curly hair!
Posted by: audun-eg ()

Hasn't always been curly. Before 82-83 his hair was rather "straight". How did he suddenly get curles? (A very stupid thread, but it just hit me...)

I used to wonder about this all the time in the 90's. I thought it would be awesome to have a photo of him with the perm rollers in.

That being said, sometimes women's hair changes texture and consistency as they get older, although it's usually after pregnancy.

For some time there he was combing his hair with an egg-beater.....

The first time I saw it was on the 1979 New Barbarians tour. A real change from the greasy spike birdsnest of the 70's.

I once heard that long-term LSD use would make your hair curly. Any truth to that?

I think when he permed it he damaged it, cause ever since then its been downhill

I think his hair tended to curl a bit long before 1982-3 as this picture from Rolling Stone in 1971 shows

Maybe in his early days he just did stuff to make his somewhat curly hair look straighter (blowdryer, gel)? I read somewhere that sometimes Keith used to cut his own hair and basically he cut away the bits he didn't like. I can see him not liking the bit that's starting to curl out and up over his left shoulder in the picture.cool smiley

the shorter his hair - thus the less weight to it, the more the wave (its not really a curl) shows

What I want to know is why there has never been any sign of a bald patch after the 'tree surgery'. I would expect at least part of his head would have been shaved for his op but there has been no noticeable sign of differing hair growth.

well, shaved hair grows back; and Keith does have a distinct penchant for bandannas & hats.

but back to the original question: another factor to bear in mind is that gray hair
rather famously tends to be a different texture than its predecessor.
my three gray hairs are distinctly wavy, while the rest of my hair is completely straight

The "change" happened between the photosession of Talk Is Cheap (no curles) and the 88 Winos tour (curles), I guess...

I think a few guys start perming their hair when it starts thinning out. Since Keith always had a lot of hair I'm sure he noticed it - the slight thinning - a long time before the public so the first step was the perm "trick", then the bandanas and hats come next....after that you go for the "Michael Stipe (REM singer) Look"......

smile: well except that he had a "perm" in 73, and as the photo from 1969 shows,
his hair's always had some wave to it; and as someone else has noted, it was in 79
that he started letting the wave show bigtime, and it wasn't due to any apparent thinning -
au contraire, even

(I can't believe I am actually posting on a thread about Keith's hair)

I think this is absolutely a non-issue. I have "wavy" hair myself (and more than three grey hairs in there as well) and one day the waves are more curly than the other. I depends on a lot of factors, like the weather (humidity), how much time I spend combing, when I washed it, the kind of shampoo I use etc. etc. etc.
So what's next, are we going to discuss the brand of shampoo Keith is using?

And extensions several times over after several failed attempts at hair implants.

Well perming isn't (I'm told) actually a good thing - unless you have naturally very thick hair, which most men don't.
Of course wearing hats likewise.
Has he never had his hair cut professionally? I can't believe that!
And the suggestion re hair implants - is this correct? Has he been asked this in interviews?

What about his nose? On several pictures his nose is never the same. Perhaps before and after sniffing cocaine.

I wonder what kind of shampoo he uses on his nose. It could be that.

What about Mick painting his nails?

Re: Keith's curly hair!

Mick hasn't really painted Keith's nails too often since 1973. maybe once or twice in 76
but only when Keith was too out of it to stop him

One would think that with Keiths money he could have afforded decent hair implants or treatments. Perhaps he did and they did not work. Who knows?

I think that he just doesnt care enough to get implants, but then again why so many hats and bandanas, oh well who knows

The bandana poltus has had mixed results - at best.

Poor results, i'd say.
Hence the hats, in recent times.

I think cheap hair implants can have bad repercussions.

Elton John and many other artists have had implants that have worked out well.

I don't know why Keith does not spend the extra $$ and have it done right?
