Problem with the Stones 'gig' was that even the journalists knew nothing about it until it had already started.

The performance was pretty much all but over before enough people had the chance to witness it.

That's exactly what made it so cool.

Really hate these "competition" and "contests". It's a bit like voting for favorite parent...or child.

The Beatles on the roof was extraordinary in that part of London and for those times. It spoke to the entire world.

The Stones, my favorite of the two bands, was a great New York moment.

I would say the Stones in the truck because they were in the middle of the street ,with the crowd in front of them.

I can't imagine how people got excited when they 1st heard the music on 5th avenue ....

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

The Stones have proven that you're never too old to be cool, so it stands to reason that you're also never too old to talk about what is and what is not cool.

COOL: The Stones announce that they will be playing a club gig TONIGHT. Thousands of Stones fans rush to the club, and a few hundred of them get in to see the show.

ULTIMATE COOL: The Stones walk into a bar unannounced, plug into whoever's gear happens to be onstage, play for whoever happens to be there, and split before word gets out and the place gets too crowded.

Without any doubt, The STONES playing ona flatbed down 5th Ave while the press waits inside for what they thought was just a press conference and I was at MSG waiting overnight for my tickets for all 5 shows!

I watched the rooftop concert the other day. I am getting sentimental. It brought tears to my eyes. What would those people and bobbies give to have their noon hour so interrupted again? And who says The Beatles were a lousy live act? I thought the whole thing playful, the performance thrilling and brave with the introduction of the new songs. Sadly, that was it.

Stones on the flatbed by far. That was about as in your face as it could get. One could only see and hear the Beatles if they were on the roof or at a higher elevation. The Stones could be see AND heard by a much larger audience.

Both acts were gimmicks to sell LP's (and tickets for the RS' tour) however, that flat bed stunt was right out of a Circus (Hum, Rock n Roll Circus?) and worked!

The Beatles didnt really have anything to promote. They were recording the aborted 'Get Back' album, and had tentative plans for a TV special, which came to nothing so they did the rooftop gig instead. The film and album that it ended up being released on didnt come out for another 15 months.

I think it was Charlie who came up with the flatbed truck idea for the Stones', based on something that jazz bands used to do years before.

Of course, John Lennon would claim he got there first:

Definitely NOT gimmicks to sell LPs. Most recent Stones album (IORR) had already been out for eight months, I think. The White Album was only two months old at the time of the rooftop show, but in no way was the rooftop show done to promote The White Album. It was done to provide a climax to their movie. They had talked about doing a REAL concert, possibly at The Roundhouse, but in the end, they got scared, they got lazy, and they asked themselves, "What is the EASIEST thing we can do that would still give our movie a suitably thrilling climax?" They played on the roof of the Apple building because it was the LEAST they could do.

I was sure someone was going to dispute my claim that the Beatles were lazy, but really, what else would you call it? By walking up to the roof of the Apple building, they were traveling the shortest distance they could possibly travel in order to give a "public" performance.

Stones easily did the better bit of promo. The Beatles performance on the roof is lame. I remember watching a documentary featuring it when I was 10. I remembered thinking "Get Yer Yas Yas Out" is better. Unfair comparison, I know, but even my 10 year-old self knew the better performance.

If the Beatles had played infront of a real audience, it might have gotten a higher review. All I see in those videos is a handful of people, some cops, and the crew. I just don't get it.
