When did The Rolling Stones Jump the Shark?
Posted by: rollmops ()

Musically, I believe, they did the jump with "Angie". Although I love that song, it was musically a departure from their musical direction started in 1968 when Jimmy Miller came on board. For the die-hard fans,it was probably a shock, I mean after Sticky Fingers and Exile, the "sirupy" string arrangement on Angie must have been a surprise for some. It kind of prepared the way for other surprises,Fool to cry, Miss you, EmotionnalRescue. Again I am not knocking down those songs but I am trying to find when they jumped.

For me, they got skis in the air with the Steel Wheels tour and cleared the shark fully when Bill left.

The moment that Justin Timberlake walked onstage (or maybe Dave Matthews).

the loss of Bill Wyman, is probably the closest they've got to 'jumping'

rollmops, you're right about "Angie". I remember when it was "officially" played for the first time on the local AM station( yes, in 1973 vinyl 45s were played on AM radio!!). Anyway I said "What the F---?" But then they played the b side and the next year we got IORR so I guess maybe they didnt "jump the shark" but the damn sure got their feet wet!!

Many of the Stones' greatest ever songs are ballads!

...and the zillions out there who bought Angie and Fool To Cry would certainly agree!

Thanks! If it means "passing your peak", they haven't done it yet IMO.

.... And Elmore James, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elvis etc. etc. I don't think you can say that they're Berry rock 'n rollers. They're so much more than that.

It doesnt just mean "passing your peak" (you seriously believe the Stones havent reached their peak yet? drinking smiley ). It means that theyve passed it to the point where its become ridiculous...or "fundamentally and permanently strayed from its original premise" to use another quote on that page.

Theyve never really jumped the shark musically for me (only a temporary blip in 1967).

Artistically - 1998/99 onwards when the thirst for money overtook everything else and dictated pretty much everything. Its accelerated ever since, unfortunately.

My point with "Jumping the Shark" was that with Jimmy Miller and up to "Angie" the Stones musically produced songs that were not "middle of the road." Angie is a great song a cousin of Wild Horses it seems but the arrangement goes grandiose in a way that attracted listeners that otherwise didn't care about the stones. It softened their image. As a good example, my mother in 1974 liked Angie. My mother who used to adore Mireille Mathieu and Charles Aznavour!!!! To me the Stones made a musical concession to widen their audience and from the point of view of a die-hard fan that was quite a jump with that song. I know that before Miller time they had produced ballads with strings but that was in their prime. Well just a tought.
Rock and roll,
Mops

I'd say the Licks tour, only because it was the first time they toured supporting their past and not their present ("Don't Stop" notwithstanding).

But with set lists like what we got in '02/'03, I can't say it really bothered me too much.

After Tattoo You. Barely a classic song in the last 27 years.

'Angie's a great track though, irrespective of whether it was typical of the Stones in style. The 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll' single is much more the point in case where the Stones begin to jump the shark, or at least tread water.

I don't think the Stones as a band have jumped the shark, but I think Keith has. It started with his "good to be here, good to be anywhere routine" and was fully completed when he added horns ansd Plink Leavell's keyboards to the intro of "Little T&A".

No (wasnt it just available in America?) ...and whilst I get your point (which I presume is that the business side has always been there - a fact I've no problem with), IMO it was from around the No Security tour onwards that it surpassed the music in terms of importance and priority.
