I love this band. If not the biggest or the best, most definitely the most underrated American band. John Fogerty was and is a genius. Their output for the 3 and half years of their existence (roughly 67-71) is mind-boggling.

Only problem with CCR is their songs are tortured beyond recogniction
by pub singers and bonfire party crashers with guitars.

Let's not forget The J. Geils Band. A kick butt,Rock & Roll boogie band that accumulated a lot of fans in their day.
I see a few bands listed here that aren't really rock & roll bands. Nirvana was hardly a rock & roll band.I don't really know what they would be classified as other than Grunge.

grand funk railroad could be in there

i wasn't alive in the 70s but from everything i have been reading they were huge...

they beat the beatles record for selling out shea stadium, they hold some crazy level of status for album sales too... but you hear very little about them

IMO, Eagles and Beach Boys are not rock bands.

Bruce, Iggy and Elvis are more solo artists imo, even though they have/had a band to back them up...

I don't think you can count Elvis Presley - a performer but not a band.

If the world was fair, the biggest bands in America should be:

J Geils Band (I miss them)
REM (seeing them Sunday)
the Ramones (I appreciate them more as time goes by)

Coop deserves a mention and has another CD due out in July.

I saw this band after the release of their second LP, right about the time that the Green River single came out...but before the release of their 3rd LP. I was really looking forward to the show. Next to the Doors and Jefferson Airplane, it was the 3rd most disappointing show I have been to. They played for 35 minutes and you couldn't even hear Tom's Rhythm which to me, was almost as important in their overall sound as John's guitar.

I've discussed my Doors experience previously on this board, and as for the Airplane, well they just took the Frisco (and I do mean Frisco) L.A. rivalry thing way to far...to the point where they often gave L.A. fans an inferior show.

Theres just so many great bands when you think about it. How about Johnny Winter
And. Put together with the remnants of The McCoys(Derringer,etc.) this band could blow your socks off especially with Johnny B. Goode and JJ Flash!!

I do believe the Black Crowes deserve a mention, though they will never equal their mentors the Faces and Stones, they have come as close as any others who have tried!

Mostly just Proud Mary BB. For some reason,everybody and their mothers think they can sing Proud Mary. This has to be the most covered song ever.

On another note.I think people are splitting hairs in the distiction between bands and solo artists. The only true solo artist would be someone who plays by themselves without any other musicains. Because even the greatest solo artists usually have a pretty good band behind them.

Sooo many great bands but only one mention of THEE biggest and best band not only in America, but the entire planet in the early 70's.....GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!!!

This band was absolutely huge...outselling and outdrawing all others for a few glorius years. They still put on a fantastic show even tho Farner has moved on...
