if exile was only a single album rather than a double and songs were kept for goats head soup what would your track listing be? would it be a better album? would exile still be a classic or does it need that double status?
I mean i dig goats head soup but it's the first album from that era that i have to skip certain songs it could have been a classic keeping songs from exile.
if exile was a single album my track listing would be the following
rocks off rip this joint tumbling dice sweet virginia loving cup happy stop breaking down sweet black angel ventilator blues all down the line shine a light soul surviour
for goats head soup;
dancing with mr d 100 years ago coming down again torn and frayed angie heartbreaker turd on the run casino boogie winter let it loose star star
b sides - silver train, just wanna see his face,hide your love, can you hear the music, shake your hips,
EXILE ON MAIN STREET 01 - Rocks Off (b-side : Stop Breaking Down) 02 - Rip This Joint 03 - Casino Boogie 04 - Loving Cup 05 - Tumbling Dice (b-side : Turd On The Run) 06 - All Down The Line (b-side : Sweet Black Angel) 07 - Sweet Virginia 08 - Happy 09 - Shine A Light 10 - Soul Survivor

But what would exile have been, if it hasn't been a double album???
Sorry for my english ; I'm a french little boy (but I like it)
What's amazing about Exile is ALL 18 tracks are outstanding. There may not be a Brown Sugar among them, but there's not one stinker in the bunch either. If it had been a single album instead of a double, it wouldn't have been any better or any worse, it just would have been shorter. But it also would not be considered a classic album. What makes it a classic is that the same high level of quality is sustained over four LP sides.
If half the tracks had been "saved" for later use, there's no question that Goats Head Soup would have been a better album, but not better than a single LP Exile and certainly not better than the 2-LP Exile we know and love.

Blasphemy! Goats head soup is a perfect album IMO. I would not change anything about it, even though Star Star is a bit sub-par as was said in MOJO special edition some years ago.
If its initial release had been in the cd era then it wouldve been a single album!!!! Seriously though I would love to hear the entire "Just Wanna see His Face" jam-wonder how long it really was?
If exile was only a single album it would be so good that we'd wish it to be double.
I think it's good as it is because this album really works as a unity. When you listen to it, almost sounds like a conceptual album.
And I'm also between those who belive that Goats Head Soup is a great underrated album (by some people) wich doesn't need improvement. I think the 70's are the true golden era for the Stones, only B&B has some low points IMHO.
