Charlie Sexton was the guitarist in Bob's band at that time.

It's good although Dylan's voice can't carry it at all.

I saw Dylan perform this song three nights in a row at the Wiltern in Los Angeles in mid-October 2002. Dylan broke out this song earlier that month, and I'm certain I had been tracking his set lists so I don't recall being surprised by Brown Sugar. (On Nov. 4, I saw Brown Sugar performed a fourth time at the Wiltern, by the Stones themselves.)

Dylan was performing a lot of cover songs on that leg of the Never-Ending Tour, including songs by Warren Zevon. I understand that Zevon himself was in the audience at one of the Wiltern shows.

My feet are planted firmly in the Dylan-can-do-no-wrong camp. When I hear people criticize the man, I listen and smile, and I think of the opening lines of the fourth verse of The Times They Are A-Changin'.

I liked Dylans Brown Sugar cover very much.

Mostly because of Sextons guitarplaying - and as a drummer: I like the drumming too.
I had this particular version on boot before (with shrieking woman at the beginning).

Now, - anyone know whether there is another/ better version somewhere?!

Dylan's drummer is George Recile, who's played w/Keith ("You Win Again" on TIMELESS). Alas, I never saw him perform BS (that tour came nowhere near me) but have enjoyed the recordings I've heard.

I did see him play "Not Fade Away" once though! : )

Although I don't like this version very much, I would have loved to be there

Ever hear Bob doing Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" ? He did it at Toad's Place. It was a 3hr + show. I think it was around 1990. My analog boots are packed away somewhere to give the eact date.

I remember when George Recile was recording with Stavin' Chain in New Orleans. And then a few years later he's with Dylan at Jazz Fest. Pretty cool. One hell of a drummer.

12th January 1990. He played eight sets that night, of around 40-50 minutes each.

George Recile also played on the Marsha Hansen recording. He must be a crony of Keith's.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand

Is that it?

I ain't no big fan of Dylan at all. Sure he's made quite a few good songs, but it's not THAT good. He is not in the same league as either Stones, Beatles or Bowie. Not at all. I'd rank him alongside Lou Reed. I've heard most of what the man has made, but I've ended up buying a greatest hits CD instead of his albums. I even have a hard time sitting through the entire greatest hits CD. Voice-wise he's like Robert Plant for me: I can only hear a few songs before the voice starts to annoy me.

I wouldn't count on it Doxa. I've given Dylan many chances over the years and it still doesn't touch my heart much.

One of the great things about Dylan is the fact that he´s had so many different musical periods in his career. Right now I´m into his "religious" phase. Lots of good songs to be found from 1979-1981. Regarding his voice, just listen to Blood on the tracks or Desire and enjoy...

Wasn't Dylan doing a lot of brown sugar in the late 70ies?

Dylan's "Brown" songs:

"Ballad of Hollis Brown" (The Times They Are A-Changin')
"John Brown" (MTV Unplugged)
"Sally Sue Brown" (Down in the Groove)
"Brownsville Girl" (Knocked Out Loaded)
"Brown Sugar"

He'll soon have enough for a "Brown" album!grinning smiley
