Shows without JJF
Posted by: franzk ()
Date: February 8, 2008 12:12

JJF must be the most played Stones song. How many shows since 1969 did NOT include it? (And I mean only full shows, not short performances like Julliard or Superbowl). I can name only three:

1. 100 Club (23rd February 1986) - no JJF and no Jagger/Richards song.
2. Enmore Theatre, Sydney (18th February 2003)
3. Cirkus, Stokholm (22nd July 2003)

Any more?

According to nzentgraf they played JJF in Atlanta 81(of course!) and also in Atlantic City 89 on all 3 shows. What Nico has on his page is what I believe!

It's too bad they didn't play JJF at the Superbowl. It would have been a better choice than any of the the three they played.

Wow, how nice - a show without JJF.

It would be great to hear a show without JJF and Brown Sugar and Start Me Up and Satisfaction and SFTD and a few others etc....

I completely disagree. JJF and BS need to be in EVERY single show. Other than that, I could care less if they omitted the other warhorses.

I thought I'd read somewhere though that JJ and HTW had been played at every show since they had been written...I'm assuming then that that was wrong?

Correct..its wrong

HTW was left out of the show for most of the 1972 tour, for example

JJF has been played live more than any other Stones song. Brown Sugar would be second, even though it was released two years after HTW.

Start Me Up hasnt been omitted too many times since it was released, though. Likewise Tumbling Dice.

im in disbelief that the stones did a oneoff show in 1986 in the midst of the infamous jagger/richards feud can someone shed some light on this please

I'm pretty sure that it was a tribute type of show for Ian Stewart who had just passed away.

Was JJF played on 2-19-1995? It is not on the recording but, that does not mean that it wasn't cut off.

No reason to think JJF was omitted in Chile 1995. Several songs from that show were never aired.

jumpin jack flash, brown sugar and paint it black should be present at every stones show.

they could drop honky tonk woman, sympathy for the devil, tumbling dice and start me up.

and its only rock and roll and you got me rocking should have warhorse status removed

I dunno...they've played JJF the same way since, what, I dunno, it's just so bland. Brown Sugar I could really take or leave...

Paint It Black? Come on...that tune is so overdone...

This is a bit OT but I was thinking the other day that on the shows I have seen only
two songs have been played in every show I have attended (82-07): Tumbling Dice and Start Me Up. All other warhorses have been dropped at least once.

theres an example.

tumbling dice, why the need to play it every show, they have better, why couldnt they alternate between that and loving cup, torn and frayed or rocks off.

At least it's not on Still Life or No Security. It's not on Licks is it. Wow! What song has been on the most live albums? Satisfaction I think.

Start Me Up from Flashpoint (and whatever else, bootleg wise), from that tour, is exceptional. I never tire of listening to that incendiary performance. I remember when it was first played on the radio how @#$%& powerful it was - it wasn't lumpy like the LP version, it was tearing and searing and - like an 800 powerboat just hauling ass as steady as possible. Just fantastic. I couldn't turn it up enough. Ronnie's playing, throughout the song, those under the meat weavings he was doing, was excellent. And his solo and outro was great too.

Does anyone feel that Flashpoint might be a bit under rated? I know it's a by-the-numbers warhorses set for the most part...but it does have some fantastic performances on it. The album still sits at #3 overall for me.
