Interesting. I just spent some time with a co-worker who has this. The perception here is it is a sound frequency we all hear, but in some, be it periodicaly or permanently the brain focuses on the frequency and exagerates it in your mind. The therapy used here is to use some taped alternate sounds to train your brian to focus on someting else. This appears to have about the same success rates as mentioned in the article. Given the choice I think I would try this non intrusive approach before drugs or an operation.

You basically have to learn to "ignore" it - kind like a form of bio-feedback.

Conversely, if I "think" about it, my ear will start ringing.

I also discovered that the ringing my ear is in the key of C!!

i agree......you learn to ignore it....it was very difficult for me in the beginning...tried some medical help, but was useless.

the last three posters seem to be talking about the "easy" kind of tinnitus -
there are different degrees of tinnitus and they aren't all the kind of thing one can just learn to ignore.

sorry - i'm not making light of anyone else's tinnitus, just noting that there are a lot of different degrees of it,
and the generalization that "you learn to ignore it" doesn't always apply.

I'm sure I don't have it as bad as some, but it truly is an annoying condition.
Coupled with the tendency to not hear as well as when I was younger, makes it even worse. Mine seems to be the ''worst'' at work [in office], when there is not many extraneous sounds to 'block' it out.
