you know there is a reason why you dont hear soul survivor on the radio nearly as much as start me up ok, yes soul surivor is an excellent song to me and everyone on this board, but the casual fan does not know what album it is from, but they damn well know what album start me up is on , most of them anyway, plus i was taslking about post 81 not pre 81 therefore souls survivor would not have been included as you well know

Are we sure that all of these people know that Start Me Up is from Tattoo You?People who have any idea may guess Jump Back or Forty Licks. The reason you hear Start Me Up more is because it is more smooth and catchy but,not necessarily better,in my opinion.

Side note : I never liked that much Claudine either.Criss Cross is a much better ottake, once again in my opinion.

I would say : Start Me Up. FanWise : Continental drift, post-brian alike song.

The Claudine comment was added because of what the other guy posted but,(talking post 1981)I prefer a handful of '93/'94 outtakes to Claudine as well.

When I used to play ABB to people and friends, the only songs with good reactions were Rough Justice and Driving Too Fast. At full volume both songs rock like hell, you can feel the walls shaking.

Under The Radar is average, b-side material, I think Don't Stop is a better song.

Blue - its a pity Jagger did not save it for a Stones album but chose to bury it on a solo single b-side instead ... it simply belongs to the Stones and it moves me more than any 'genuine' Stones stuff since Continental Drift.

apart from Blue - Laugh I Nearly Died and Under The Radar come pretty close.

With total respect of the topic: "Re: last fantastic stones song":

This Place Is Empty , and I'm gonna tell you why:

I liked a lot A Bigger Bang; a few songs really blew me up. TPIE passed by without making a lot of noise...
Then, a beautiful evening in Vienna... hearing it live; This Place Is Empty is for me the really last fantastic Stones song.

Funny to see people mention 'Don't Stop' as a Great stones song, I know everyone's opinion is different -- I think, in the pantheon of great stones songs, 'Don't stop' doesn't even come close. Incredibly mediocre, soulless stones track, albeit quite good live as a sing-a-long no-brainer rocker, uninspired lyrics, carbon-copy stones riffs...

Some of the last truly great I think are two exceptional ballads from the much-maligned 'Steel Wheels' albums, the gorgeous "Almost Hear You Sigh" & "Slipping Away", and the wonderous "Moon Is Up" from VL. Sterling tracks all, the pair from 'Steel Wheels' being two of the finest ballads they've ever written. IMO of course

A lot of more recent tracks come very close though, Side-3 of ABB being one of the finest stones sides in aeons - "This Place Is Empty"/"Oh No Not You Again"/"Dangerous Beauty"/"Laugh I Nearly Died". LIND in particular, and following DB on the album, wonderful stuff indeed.

To echo Doxa's comments, some of the finest latter day material has also been on Jagger and Richards' solo albums -- Keef's magnifique "Hate it when you leave" & Mick's "Angel in my heart"(or "Blue") being as brilliant as peak stones.

After all these years they can still do it, make fine albums(both solo and togethar) with even some choice songs being truly great, incredible band.

I'd rather see the thread headline here as : " Latest ~ "
... The last fantastic song by the Stones,
I hope & believe is far far away in the future.

quite agree about 'moon is up' i love a lot of VL.
and if we're to tangentially approach the solo stuff, I'd have to say that 'evening gown' is one of the most perfectly written and delivered 'stones' songs, or song by a stone, that i've ever heard. the jerry lee/mick duet version is a classic too imo. very much so. totally wonderful those two...wow.

i'd also like to augment my 'let me down slow' pick by adding 'rough justice'
they both really got me very excited; but the rest of the album, which other fans seem to mostly admire, did not move me in the 'classic' 'fantastic' sense; tho i like a few other cuts there...but sometimes these things change with time for me...
the first two cuts on ABB are monstrously good and fun and plenty fantastic enough for me.

Satisfaction!
It's been a long and slow downhill slide since that FANTASTIC song.

If that´s your sincere opinion I really admire you for your patience over the last 40 years. Who knows, some day they will shape up...

In order of relevance:

-Jump On Top Of Me
-Don't Stop
-Too Tight
-Moon Is Up
-You Don't Have To Mean It
-Out Of Control
-She Saw Me Coming
-Stealing My Heart

enter Mick's Out Of Focus right after You Don't Have To Mean It, if eligible.

Out of control (especially live version)

Re: last fantastic stones song

For me a fantastic Stones song is one that necessarily is fantasic on stage too. Therefor Anybody Seen My Baby is in my eyes nothing more than a very good recording (one of the most appealing songs after Start Me Up to the bigger public, which is an achievement). But Out Of Control surely is a fantastic latter day Stones song, and in the same way I would imagine that Under The Radar would have been SMOKING too, live on stage... unfortunately, we'll never know.

Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to drive your car from nowhere to another nowhere, listening to the radio, the moment they announce the new RS-record Brown Sugar... I really cannot imagine what that must have been like. Brown Sugar, No Expectations, SFTD, YCAGWYW... all very surprising songs that must have blown everyone away the second of their release... :-s WHERE WAS I??? ;-)

funny and weird how tastes can be so different. exept for OOC, the songs you named would be on my "their worst songs of the last 2 decades-list". ;-)

Last completely amazing and stunning stellar song was Out Of Control IMO. But that's not saying that the likes of RJ and BOMH doesn't come very, very close.
