Interesting that so many people find "Love Is Strong" such a remarkable song. Maybe because of being the first single of the album and the video? I really loved the song when it came out - it sounded so archaic 'real' Stones, with the harmonica and all, but I think the time has not has not been kind to it. It is not very interesing composition, the production is perhaps a bit too simple-minded and retro (a'la early 90's), plus the lyrics, starting from the title, are not just naive but horrible. The over-all effect is that the band tries a bit too much to sound like as harsh and dangerous as 'they used to do'. I realized this very well when I listened to FORTY LICKS, and in that context the song sounded - to be honest - boring.
Just to compare the caliber of a song: take "Stray Cat Blues"; it has everything there that "Love Is Strong" fails to match.
But the original question; that is a difficult one. They have made many good and intersting songs during the last decades ("Continental Drift", "Saint Of Me", "Out Of Control" to name a few), but I don't think any of them is 'fantastic' by their own criteria (how do you call "Brown Sugar" or "Gimme Shelter" then?). I would say that in TATTOO YOU you will find the last really important songs ("Start Me Up" and "Waiting On A Friend") that instantly have the feeling in them that "Oh yeah, this is the REAL THING" and adds something to their incredible legacy.
After TATTOO YOU, perhaps the best individual songs could be found in Mick and Keith's solo albums (For example, a lost gem like "Hate It When You Leave Me" surpasses easily any ballad Keith has done for The Stones since "All About You").
But that's just my two cents.

Not a huge fan of anything post-Some Girls, but Tatto You had some gems on it - Slave was awesome. . .Waiting On a Friend, not bad, Heaven was cool. . .but anything 'fantastic' - that's a tough call when we tend to compare everything to the 'great years' 69-73-ish?? Probably that last great hit commercially was 'Start Me Up'??
The last Stones song to really blow my mind, to stop me in my tracks and make me realize anew why they are the greatest rock and roll band ever was "Laugh, I Nearly Died"...an epic, and a perfect blend of sophistication and weariness...and that was only because it followed "Dangerous Beauty" (on A Bigger Bang), a song which made me literally drop my jaw in puzzlement as to why it wasn't the single off the album (brilliant mix of danger, allegory, topical politics and vicious Stones-deluxe riffs)...which followed "Oh No, Not You Again", which brought the same rush to me that songs like "Where The Boys Go" and "If You Can't Rock Me" once gave me...

We Stones fans of course find a handful of great stuff on all the albums since Tatoo You - but the average casual fan isn't going to discover these songs - radio stations quit on the stones since 'start Me Up' for some reason - maybe the boy bands and Brittny Spears and all that crap just took over in the 80's - MTV no doubt ruined rock n roll as we know it and knew it for sure - thank God the stones and others still record and WE all can enjoy, but getting anything on the radio after the 80's - forget it. Pop/hip-hop crap became radio/MTV - and very visual due to MTV and all that. We're now back to pop/rap/hip-hop crap that has a shelf life of about 2 months. . . .the Stones are just considered dinasours and don't have a chance on poppy radio anymore - but, but in the anals of classic rock - they will prevail once again and kick everyone's ass because they're based in the blues that trancends all other fads - I predict yet another 'come back' album much like Some Girls - and yes, the radio stations won't be able to neglect them. Come on boys, do it again!
Getting back to 'fantastic songs', they've been doing it here and there - but let's put together a 'total come back' of the Stones and wake this world up.
number one is Back of My Hand -EXCELLENT LIVE AND TO SEE MICK PLAY SLIDE COOL!!!!
and more Fancyman Blues - GIVE ME MORE OF THAT KINDA STUFF BOYS Out Of Control - THE song just builds up and up and up EXCELLENT LIVE!!!! Might As Well get Juiced - sure will mick how about tomorrow night Rough Justice Continental Drift - cool cool and more cool

This is not about hits. The thread is entitled "Last Fantastic Stones Song".They face long odds of ever producing a top two hit again simply because, not enough of the people who determine which songs are hits listen to new Stones songs and/or albums. This is because the band is not as popular as it used to be - because it formed in 1962 - 45+ years ago.By the way, they have had top 15,top 20,top 30,and top 40 songs since Start Me Up.There is actually only one other song they have ever written as popular as Start Me Up.Does this mean Bitch,Soul Survivor etc. are good but not great????

I disagree altogether.Don't Stop is god awful for one thing. It doesn't come close to Under The Radar or about another 12 more recent songs.
