Why are people focusing on classic rock bands? Forget the dinosaurs......there is lots of good rock music played regionally and locally.....get out and listen to it at your local night club, theater, or civic center....you won't find it on the radio for crying out loud.....and you will find it at music festivals.....see you at Bonnaroo this summer.

It is on life support now, and DEAD shortly.

"It is on life support now, and DEAD shortly."

Silly statements that just show your short sighted. You aint gonna get the Old Grey Whistle Test back.

But, listen to Jools Holland's later, check the local press, blogs..... many, many good bands around.

I don't know boys, The latest stuff I like is WOLFMOTHER and JET, and both are a few years old. Do me a fav and give me a 5 groups list from each of you of some really hot new - 2006/7 - bands...... Don't think it's possible. When The BLACK CROWES and COLLECTIVE SOUL and (fill in one more) can't get any airplay/MTV play what does that say.... RAP IS CRAP AND CRAP IS KING.... even Tom Petty is semi retiring.....WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER/TURN OUT THE LIGHT.....

this thread is more evidence of the closeminded nature of many people on this board. so many here are just so quick to write of any band that didn't form before 1975. it's really sad.

listen, there's lots of contemporary rock music that i don't dig. (lots of the 'indie' stuff that's popular in my beloved Portland.) but for every 'decemberists,' there's, i dunno, say . . . pearl jam! (ok, they're aging, but they'll definitely make it past 2015.) more excitingly, in portland last week i had the privelege of seeing the band The Oedipus Quintet. They were young'uns - roughly my age -; and rocked - hard. (Two stones covers as well: Love in Vain & Sympathy!) The point is that there is still plenty of exciting rock music being played at the local level. Oh, and for bands that had big success recently, do any of you know the band Blue October? They released a phenomenal song early this year - Into the Ocean - and it went big.

Then again, you can surely dismiss my opinion because I was BORN in 1986.

*everybody need a little help sometime!*

Bongster, I love PEARL JAM, I love U2, get ALL of both bands stuff - DVD's, CD's, Some books, etc. I love NINE INCH NAILS (the latest Live DVD is one of the best shot concerts ever) I love NIRVANA - the just released MTV UNPLUGGED is amazing BUT it's all different now - those are all OLD BANDS !!!.... Free Downloading, just liking one song and moving on, no loyalty to any bands, bands showing up on David Letterman, Leno, and Sat Night Live after one hit and 3 rough weeks on the road - "LIFE SUPPORT WITH AN EXTR HELPING OF MORPHINE ON THE SIDE"

IT AIN'T DARK YET/BUT IT'S GETTIN' THERE - Bobby "Cadillac Man" Dylan

Skelter here are 5 I saw over the weekend, in bars and a civic center:

Jason Isbel and the 400 Unit (formerly of Drive By Truckers)

Gov't Mule

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Stockholm Syndrome

Marsupials

These were blistering rockers, every one of them......rock is far from dead. Who gives a rat's ass about MTV? I can't believe it was even mentioned in this thread about Rock and Roll.

You only want five?

Queens of the Stone Age
The Coral
The View
The Kooks
The Zutons
The Enemy
The On Offs
The White Stripes
Stereophonics
Kaiser Chiefs
Manics
Klaxons
Radiohead
Detectives
Wombats
Foo Fighters
Bloc Party
Richard Hawley
The Verve
Muse

Want me to go on?

Try and catch a few live. A small club show can sure beat the hell outta a vast stadium being made to sit down whilst paying £10 for a pint of weak piss.....

Rock is constantly fracturing into more and more sub-categories.

But hear me now and listen to me later :

I have seen the future of Rock n Roll and it is.......GREEN DAY

Every record as good or better than the last. Phenomenal lead singer & song-writer and the best live show you could ask for. Get on board people. Their next album, coming out soon, will ROCK

Yeah but Lukester, those are local/regional bands I believe... where am I gonna hear them?? I only mention MTV cause it has now become the BIG DESTROYER of anything good. Me and a few buds had a band together a few years back - "PUS" - and we rocked like Crazy Horse on Dental Gas and too many SOMA'S with Beer... BUT, we were NEVER EVER gonna get anywhere (that wasn't really the point anyway) I'm talking about National/International Bands.... Don't feel good about the ROCK situation at the moment....

OUT !!! off to "Middle Of your Career (or Later) Land":

THE VERVE
FOO FIGHTERS
RADIOHEAD
STEREOPHONICS
WHITE STRIPES
QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE

MUSE, I have their CD, they have that great, freaky video but they're not that new

Yeah, Los Angeles - home of THE DOORS !!! Yippy !!!!

Out of a list of 20 you pulled six that you think are 'old'? With a career of ten years??? AND were on a ROLLING STONES board!!!

MTV has never catered for the whole music scene. You gotta discover for yourself.

A few weeks ago I saw the QOTSA and it was mind blowing.......

Give it ago....

" the death of rock is the death of me and rock is...DEAD" Jim Morrison

i posted that quote because it shows that people have been saying that for 40 years. i think it's bull. just because rock music doesn't sound the same as when you were a teenage does not mean it's dead it has evolved

Re: Will rock (as we know it) be dead by 2015?

....Skelter, yes those bands were regional, with the possible exception of Gov't Mule which is an Allman Brothers spin off, (and Marsupial which is local). But what's wrong with that? I don't understand your point. If you can easily find excellent musicians playing rock and roll music that makes you want to dance, then why say rock and roll is dying? I can't shake a stick around here without hitting a damn good rock guitarist.

Because there's ALWAYS been regional and always will be.... but the stuff that shakes up THE PLANET is disappearing. The industry is changing because of greed and money (same shit that goes back to the Bible and Koran and FOREVER...) and it jsn't gonna be the same AT ALL in the future, it's like FILM, FILM (Movies) used to be great, now, 1 out of 30 cut it.....

Before you switched it - I thought I had a brain tumor coming on - don't confuse the geezer like that.....

"I Strongly Dislike Greed" (Lukester Quote - I liked this one better)

I know you do my friend, and I know how freely you are willing to pass around your seed, YOUR Seed, but for free, never asking for a dime from the women folk of Carolina (You might sneak into SC once in a while so I'm keeping it open). Now that is walking the walk and talking the talk - no greed there WHAT-SO-EVER and I salute you and admire you for it. There, I said it, you have a true fan in Helter.....

Huh? There is something wrong with playing small venues? The circus still plays arenas, just bring your Ipod.

Sounds more like you are starving because you are so used to being forcefed. In other words right now you are getting the music you deserve. Enjoy.

MySpace, college radio, word of mouth but I guess if your friends are as lame as you it won't work too well.

Thanks Helter, although I don't spread THE SEED anymore, I nevertheless still like to sow without reaping........thanks for noticing, my friend (and just for the record, I avoid SC as much as possible, but I guess I won't rule it out)

Yeah , now all the big things are for nothing , its all fuked by now , we just have the stones , Chuck berry , Buddy Guy , Eric Clapton , The Who , and sometimes youll catch Jeff Beck , BBKing or any rockstar playing with some other guys at a bar or that kind of stuff ( i dont count u2 , or that stuff , theyre not rock bands.)ACDC also is not up on stage again.
Maybe we have another chance , the real music can be back in 5 years or so if God comes from Heaven and He tells all the people whats the big deal , that would be a big miracle .
Im 13 and I have the honor of not being included in those groups of guys with their punk and hip hop ass-sukers stuff , im a rockboy , I would like to get something like the men we got in the 60-70-80's like Led Zep , Queen , Beatles , Jimi hendrix , Doors ; NOW , any intent of being so good in guitar and doing perfect songs , we always wont get anything , actually , you just have to do some easy riffs and you have a big hit , i dont like that , because it aint so spiritual and doesnt look so magnificent , people here in Mexico : example: A girl wrote on youtube that when she saw the mtvla awards and she saw "panda" a very famous band here, she said it was the best fking day in her life , i was going to laugh , lets put some originalm dvds of the stones playing live , they have the spirit , the happiness , they have the big thing on them , theyre the best ones , even when theyre drunk on stage and they forget the chords , so , WHAT!"!"!" , now , i think just like a 10% of people in the world seem to care about it , now , it is all shit , shit , shit
Someone has to do something , this is the time for changing something , i think we all agree that we dont want to listen Honky Tonk Women , Brown Sugar or Tumbling Dice everyshow , right??
we need the new stuff and the never played stuff .
All this is about to get lost in the world , the rocknroll and all of its fans and everything is going to get sent to the fk
Im sorry about this , but if no one comes up againa as old bands did , this will be over , totally over in just a few years...........
its gone! cant believe it !

AHA , which are those bands???
tell me , theyve played on big places , at least Fleet Center or that kind of stuff?? , we listen about and to them on the radio , tv , or friends at least one time by week??
NO , SIR , WE DONT
The stones , and all the big bands we always listened to , play in bigger places , get millions of copies sold , of those bands , ive just heard 3 names , and they aint famous.
Im sick of listening to Green day , that someone here says they rock , Simple Plan , and hundreds of artisrs , including hip hop and that crap made by computer , yeah , theyre pretty famous , they got the famous thing on them , but they dont have what rock bands have , and the bands youve mentioned , maybe they have the rocknroll spirit on them , but the they dont include the famous thing , instead , Led Zep , and all of the bands we all like have both things , thats what i call Royal RockNroll , actually , we wont find any of those bands , do you get the point?
