Indian Girl

Everyone always slags this song as one of the worst and to me it is always a (very) hidden favorite. It is a bit strange and hard to decipher, but that is fun. It could be said to be mocking and/or dark. One could not call it optimistic, certainly. But there is a certain feeling to it that I find compelling. It is kind of a reincarnation, if you will, of some of their best (dark) sixties material (except, I suppose, with a gender reversal if you consider Rambler, Sympathy, others to be about masculine subjects)

I know that the Stones will never it play it live because that would be a risk for them, but that is too bad. I think it would go over really well, even though unusual. Pity we'll never know. Go ahead and keep playing freaking Angie instead, it doesn't hurt me any...does it?

um . . . you seem to have a very narrow definition of 'everyone.' i, for one, love it.

too bad that my screams of 'PLAY INDIAN GIRL!!!' at nijmegen were to no avail . . .

Isn't that where they played, er, UPTOWN GIRL instead? For anyone who might care...

i think the stones tend to look at the emotional rescue album as one of their worst albums. personaly i think it's a pretty good album . not their best but defo not their worse

Yeah, I like it too! Actually, a very tenderly sung and played ballad with some strangely dark lyrics. Some great acoustics on it, with a great vibe. And Mick really lays down some satiny vocals. A great tune!

A lot of very tender emotion, I agree.

What song comes after Indian Girl?

I get confused because instead of listening to the Emotional Rescue record, I have a mix tape.

There is a rare b-side or unreleased bootleg track that comes after Indian Girl on my tape called "The Cat is Out of the Bag"

Anyone know this song. It really exposes, fully, the awesome power of the band. Very raw sound.

Angie....Blinded By Love...Going Home...
Sing This All Together...Too Rude...Feel On Baby...etc

i canĀ“t stand it - micks vocals are horrible (sorry!)! for me one of the worst stones songs ever!

There seems be a gap here

Re: Indian Girl

I thinks the lyrics are horrible. I can live with Mick's vocals

Re: Indian Girl

Indeed. The gap is kind of fun and exciting, however.

>> (except, I suppose, with a gender reversal if you consider Rambler, Sympathy,

... huh??
after some more caffeine: okay, i guess you mean Rambler & Sympathy have male "narrators".
but Indian Girl is a dialogue between a male & a female, so in that respect it's more like Hey Negrita.

anyway ... i don't mind Indian Girl - it's not my favourite of the Stones' Highly Atmospheric Pastiche Things,
and i don't recall ever having one of those "i've got to hear that right now" moments with it,
but i don't mind it.

always kind of liked it. Keith's backing vocals on the chorus are excellent. It's like the last time Keith still had the had high pitch on record. Boy, I loved Keith's voice back then.

just curious has it ever been rehearsed by the band pre-tour?

That album initially seemed like a letdown but I quickly started to appreciate the variety on that album! The funk of Dance, the reggae in Send it to Me, the rock in Summer Romance, Where the Boys Go, Let Me Go, She's So Cold, and the country tinges on Indian Girl and All About You. All great songs in my opinion.

In retrospect I think it's quite a good album.

Funny you should mention that song. I have been traveling a bit so central america ...and when I came back I found that I was singing & playing this song often. Not all of the stuff I play sounds great ..but I have to admit that this # sounded pretty good! To borrow a Keith line ."I could get behind it". Although it is not considered one of their great songs ..Ireally enjoy it.

They did warm us up when ER first came out. Went plenty of times to the record store waiting to come out and have in my hands. I t xas delayed.

When I finally did and went home to play it I was blew away. This was a couple years after the '78 tour and Some Girls that had me asking for more.

All in all a great album, the lyrics to Indian Girl are soooo good and full of political content, lets not forget the Sandinista Revolution in those days and Cuba exporting its own all the way to Angola.

Love Indian Girl & the entire Emotional Rescue album - actually, I prefer ER to any post-1972 Stones album, and don't understand why it gets the short shrift.
