If Ronnie had not joined. Who would you have liked to?

In 74 during the recordings of Black and Blue ,The Stones were auditioning for a replacement for Mick Taylor and during the sessions in Munich a whole bunch of guitar players tried out for the gig.
Among them:
Wayne Perkings,Roy Buchanan, Steve Marriott,Jeff Beck,Peter Frampton, and maybe a few others that don't come to mind now, anyway who would have you have choosen?

We can wait for the first one to answer Mick Taylor....

I don't really like "what if questions" and I think The Stones made the right decision to chose Ronnie.

Obviously Ronnie was the right choice, but my premise is if Ronnie had said no. then who?

Ronnie could have been in the Stones by '69, if Ronnie Lane hadn't taken the phone call

he says so in this podcast interview

Ronnie was the best choice.

Joe Walsh of the Eagles would have been an excellent fit...personality wise and playing with his tasty leads just like Taylor.

However...Joe Walsh might have been a worse drug/drinking/coke partner with Keith than Ronnie Wood

And that, ladies and gents, would have been the end of the Rolling Stones.

Dave Edmunds woulda been GREAT. Excellent vocalist, songwriter, as well as guitar. He coulda been a contender for Brian's job, too. Probalby TOO talented.

My guess...if it wasn't Ronnie, the position would have been a revolving door.

Without Ronnie, would we have had the Stones for 30 more years ???
He did a tremendous job standing between Mick and Keith during the hard years.

Maybe they would have split without his intervention...

These three would not be a good fit. Especially Marriott and Frampton. Listen to Humble Pie "Rockin the Fillmore" and that will answer that.

The Stones are more R&B with less metal (especially now) but my choice for a better fit would be George Harrison.

George Harrison?????

In 1974?

Get outta here......

George Harrison appeared to be intrigued by the Rolling Stones. He appeared backstage with them during the 75 tour. He also visited the Stones backstage during their 7/11/95 show at Wembley Stadium. His stagefright would have automatically disqualified him for the job.

This may sound crazy, but I think Mick Ronson would have been a good choice.

Tasty leads and named .... Mick!

I just read that about Ronnie Lane taking the call from the Stones and saying " Ronnie is happy where he is!". It was not meant to be at that time and according to Ronnie from his book, he always felt he's be in the Stones! I'm actually very glad MIck Taylor came on board after Jones died! Think of all of that awesome music Taylor played that never would have been created if ROnnie joined in '69.

Mick Taylor. No doubt

Wayne Perkins. He meshed well with Keith on Black and Blue. I expect that he wpould have got the job if Ronnie had not been such a 'good' social fit.

But 'Wayne' is no name to be taken seriously in the British Rock/Blues scene. He would have to have accepted the name Mick.

Clapton. Or Waddie Wachtel. Ronnie has probably never inspired Keith to any creativity, let alone Ronnie's pedestrian solos, live and in studio.

Wayne Perkins would have been good pick! i think he could really play and his ego would have been in check to play behind keith!

i'm very happy they went with woodie...because he is a TRUE ROLLING STONE!

getting back to what if's???

if Brian Jones was still alive when taylor quit i WOULD LOVE TO SEE BRIAN JONES RETURN!!! wow---wonder what that be like?????

This is a fanciful question that anyone on this board, myself included, has probably spent way too much time pondering. The most important part of this job description is looks/image and being able to survive between Jagger and Richards. You would think this job would be a plum position, but I doubt it. It requires someone with pliable personality, as Woody has freely admitted. Talent-wise it may even require someone that is capable of playing down to Richards' and the band's musical style. It does not require anyone with real licks capable of playing a melody. The impact of such a player on the band would be enormous.

Having said that...I continue to have this reoccurring image: Johnny Winter with Dr. John on piano. They would add some well needed grit and authenticity to the band. The closer the band stays to its American musical roots, the better.

I have other weird images as well...Like Mick Taylor joining U2. Live, that band needs a lead guitarist to add texture and complete its sound. THAT fantasy really excites me.

if ronnie never joined the stones , the band would now be a 3 piece unit because it took mick and keith nearly 20yrs to make him a band member , i cant see any other guitarist lasting that long . i love mick taylor's playing but i feel even if he stayed , he would of never adapted to the punk, new wave, and disco sounds the stones embraced in the late 70's and early 80's. is ron wood one of my favorite guitarist? hell no , but is he a perfect fit in the stones? hell yeah. things happen for a reason
