Not too crazy Elmo, l have read somewhere that Mick Ronson also did try out for the gig, imo it would have been a great choice, good player and he had the look.
If he had joined he would have had to be replaced, since he passed on a few years back....

Nils Lofgren tried out too....or was he not allowed? I heard that Keef demanded money from HIM if he wanted to play with the Stones ;-)

l never heard that story..Mick more than likely would have been the one demanding the money, anyway is just one more urban legend about the Stones..

i heard that something like that too, mofur - but in the version i know
it was a totally hypothetical "he'd have to pay me to audition him" remark -
in other words the guy wasn't even close to being under consideration

What was Wayne Kramer doing at the time? Besides a lot of heroin.

But probably the best would have been LeRoy 'Sugarfoot" Bonner.

If Clapton had joined there would be no Layla or Wonderful Tonight, not that those songs have a stones sound to them but the fact Mick and Keith would have taken songwriting credits for the songs.

I respectfully disagree...Layla was 1970 and Clapton would have been long gone from the Stones by the time Wonderful Tonght came out, but maybe the Stones would have performed Cocaine?

Whoever replaced Mick Taylor would never have lasted more than a year or two, and there's enough evidence to suggest that had Ron Wood not joined the Stones, they'd have wound it up by the end of the seventies.

Ronnie saved them.

If I go back to those days there were quite a lot of players I would have liked in the Stones:
Wayne Perkins,Mick Ronson, Nils Lofgren,Little Steven,Harvey Mandel(at least in studio),Rick Derringer,Clem Clempson,P.Frampton,James Williamson,Bobby Tench,Andy Taylor,Joe Walsh, Blondie,Steve Marriott . .

And - if that would count - many players in Punk/ Post-Punk,

plus all those guys in the days of bands like Black Crowes, Quireboys,Georgia Satellites, Guns & Roses, etc.

+ too young Charlie Sexton

Mick Ronson would have been ideal. But he was working full time with Ian Hunter, after the breakup of Mott the Hoople (which Ronno had joined just before, and played on two singles by them) working on Hunter's "Ian Hunter" album. The did a brief U.S. tour and then broke up (at least until they reunited in '79.)

Ronson then joined Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, and from there produced Roger McGuinn's "Cardiff Rose" album.

Great arranger, producer, guitarist...he could have done a lot for the Stones.

And more importantly...THE FACES WOULDN'T HAVE BROKEN UP!!!

Actually, I was taking it back to 1969 before Mick Taylor was asked to join. I agree with the thought of them performing Cocaine.

Interesting comments!
Doc, pmk and ghostryder, I especially like how you characterize the unique contributions of Ronnie, considering the configuration, skills and inclinations of the rest of the band.

Yeah, fvck this thread.

Ronnie was the right choice. Whoever said it was right - the Stones would never have gone through the amazingly creative periods they went through (punk, disco, funk) without him. And he's held the @#$%& band together more than once. I doubt any of those other guitarists would've done the same. Because here's the thing about Ronnie: he was a fan of the Stones before he was a Stone. He understands what they mean to the world, and the consequences that their break-up in the 1980s would've had on music and the world in general.

And another thing. Why bash his playing? Why the hell do we do that? - HIS PEDESTRIAN SOLOS? It fits the Stones music perfectly. I would not want to see the Stones with Mick Taylor today. I would not even want to see them with a zombie Brian Jones. Ron Wood symbolizes what the Stones music is about - surviving and having a rocking time.

Listen to Tumbling Dice, Ft. Worth, 1978 - AMAZING
His Start Me Up solo? - Sends me into a groove everytime.

Asking for Clapton or Page to play with the Stones is like trying to order duck at a Chulahoma BBQ joint - IT AIN'T ON THE MENU. The Stones are sloppy, satisfying, and rock your socks off whambamthankyouma'am!

Ronnie is perfect for that.

The Stones are a family.

You know what this thread is akin to?

It's like saying - OKAY, we know that we have to live with our brother/sister/mother/father - BUT: if we could choose anyone else to be that person- WHO WOULD WE PICK?

And so, I say again - fvck this thread.

Long live Ronnie.
Long live the Stones.

If he hadn't been run down by a drunk driver in 1973, Clarence White of The Byrds would have been my choice. Fantastic guitar player!

This is a Stonesforum. So everybody can live out their fantasies!

Even if the same threads come up again and again.

I think on the long run Ron was surely the right choice.

Personaly I loved the Faces and especially Ron's early solo-stuff.
But in the Stones there was always something missing to me! And many others who worked with them said the same! (Glyn Jones, M. Chess . .)

I'm sure other/ better guitarplayers would have had a lot to offer to their post-IORR stuff! I'd loved to hear their contributions to Stones albums.

But of course most probably that wouldn't have lasted too long.
All in all and over the years he was the right one!
And in the pictures he looked just great!

can you imagine if it was jeff beck, that would have lasted about half of the 75 tour and he would have been out with that huge ego of his, although why i dont know, he is a legend in his own mind

Anybody could do it ?!
Maybe, - but the thing is HOW they do it!!

And to Beck, - that's why I didn't put him on my list. Although his playing would be great on some tracks!
Beck and Jagger could work well with each other musically! (Have my doubts about Keith).
