Just to note: the guitar Brian is playing in the picture is not the same guitar as pictured on the right. Both are Harmony Startosphere's but these are two different guitars. This harmony belongs to a collection of guitars atributed to Brian (like the hard Rock Cafe Vox VI), but until date not of the instruments has been proven genuine.

hi mathijs

sorry to seem churlish, but it IS the same guitar. if you speak with pat andrews, who I saw last night, she will confirm that this is true. so will pat townshend and christie's of london. I bought it in the mid sixties from eric easton and have had it ever since. it not a "startosphere" but a "stratotone", built in the usa in 1959. so the guitar does not belong to any collection, but to me personally.

I'll be happy to hear from you if you have any doubts or comments!

cheers

robert

it's a Stratotone Mars to be exact, right?
here's a page that includes the 1962 catalogue description of the model: [harmony.demont.net]

First, I don't want to speak with Pat Andrews, as the bunch of people around the Brian Jones fanclub are a bunch of utter freaks. Sorry to say that.

Second, in the world of collecting guitars, any claim without proof is worthless. You need a written document with pictures, or you need pictures of the original player/owner where you can really identify the guitar. You can do this for example by comparing the flame pattern of the guitar. Wear and tear is not considered good proof, as that can be easily faked.

You got the guitar from somebody who said it was Brian's original guitar, and unless you have real proof, your claim is void. The Stratotone was a very cheap Wallmart guitar, and thousands and thousands were sold.

Over the years, many guitars were attributed to Jones, but only Brian's Goldtop owned by Bill Wyman is considered real (although even that can't be proven beyond doubt -we have to believe Wyman). His Vox VI is owned by the Hard Rock Cafe, but there were so many doubts that at the Christie's auction it only managed to reach $2500. A Firebird VII has turned up without proof, his Vox Mando guitar was bought by Ron Wood and he claims it was Brian's.

The problem is: I can find a real late '50's Stratotone within three days and claim that my dad got it personally from Brian when he was in London in '64. Would you believe me?

Mathijs, why do you care so much?

If someone claims it to be Brians, why can't you just accept that maybe it is?

Get some other interests mate, eh?

This may not be the right venue but you've piqued my interest. What's the story behind the Brian Jones fanclub anyway?

Go to the search function on this site and type "Brian Jones Fan Club", ans you'll see what Mathijs is talking about. Some pretty peculiar stuff and far fetched theories and "dodgy" fund raising. The rest, you better find out for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Yep, Mathjis knows his stuff and I enjoy reading his comments, but this thread was only started to to inform about the Brian Jones mueseum. NOT an invite to fire off another sodding 'Brian played this, didn't play that, this wasn't his guitar' thread. Thats all.

I didn't know oldkr was gay!

Ah, wouldn’t you like to know sssoul ;o)

No, just don't see as to why every Brian thread started with good intentions has to tail off into unrelated nonsense. This thread was started with the sole intention of informing about the new museum. Instead, the usual culprits have to turn it on its head. That is all.

well no, not necessarily! :E
and as one of the ones who gets into the historical details of the Stones' guitars,
i don't consider it "unrelated nonsense" - au contraire! it's about one of the museum exhibits, isn't it?

It is about one of the museum exhibits, yes. However, why does Mathjis immediately have to be so sceptical? Why cannot he just accept that you know, maybe, just maybe, it genuinely was one of Brian’s guitars? I don't see why scepticism even needs to come into it.

I love a good guitar discussion and lets not beat around the bush, Mathjis is the daddy when it comes to guitars, Its just that I feel his keen eye was perhaps trying to be a little antagonistic here? Have you read the farcical threads over on the Rocks Off board?

my understanding is that it's not "immediate" - Mathijs has paid some attention before now
to the assorted guitars that are said to have belonged to Brian. and no, i haven't been following Rocks Off lately -
do you have a link? it's a hairy site to wade through without a guide :E

LOL yes, while Mathijs knows his stuff we have a differing opinion on the importance of Brians stellar skills on the recorder!
