keith and hendrix
Posted by: guitarbastard ()

i didnt study stonesology thats why this is maybe a "stupid" topic. but i'm just curious what keith though/ thinks about hendrix. did/does he like him as a musician? are there any interviews with keith talking about jimmy? did hendrix like the stones / keith's guitarplaying? did they ever play together?
somehow i never really read anything about this topic.
since i admire both of them, i'd be very intersting to get to know some facts...
thanks alot!

"Glamorous" (Thank you so much sssoul; I needed that today) stonesrule reporting for corrections of myth.

Rooster put it well as JH being a shock to everybody's system. That was definitely true re UK musicians and ultimately the growing legion of fans.
Keep in mind Jimi had gone through four years of intense poverty, struggle in New York and criss-crossing America before he went to London in September 1966 and became somebody.

The Stones had seen him in New York at a club before he hit London so they already appreciated him. Each of the Stones -- Brian, Mick, Charlie, Bill and Keith appreciated Jimi.

Re JH, Keith, Linda, she dug Jimi and she was helpful. End of story. Did Keith really mind? Not really. He and Jimi always got along. The Stones were nothing but supportive of Jimi and very shaken by his death. He admired them greatly.

Discount half of what you've heard or read about Marianne or Devon and any jealousy stuff between Mick and Jimi. When all was said and done, chicks were a dime a dozen to all of these boys.

All Jimi ever really loved was music.

She was Keiths girlfrined and left Keith for Jimi which caused Jimi to call Lindas father. And use the n-word.

I guess you mean Keith phoned...

Anyway, what is your source for this piece of gossip? And, why do you keep repeating it in every thread that mentions Linda Keith?

What's your source? My source is Linda Keith, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards. The book Room full of mirrors with interviews with Linda Ketih, to name one. Jimi and Keith laughs at the whole drama a few years later in that backstage clip at MSG 1969.
I repeat it because noone else can say it. Linda Keith wasnt Keiths ex-girlfriend, we all know she left him for Jimi Hendrix. And Keith was jelous. It's a cool inside story.

slow way down, LAF - bravo for naming one source,
but when/where have you heard this story from Jimi & Keith??

huh??
the story's been told all over the place (i mean apart from your repetitions of it!)
i'd love it if the gallant and glamourous Stonesrule felt like elaborating
on which parts of it are baloney, please and thank you very kindly

Ok, in that clip Keith and Jimi talk and have a giggle about a girl called Linda, but other than that there's no insight in to who did what back in 66 from that clip.

What is Linda Keith quoted as saying in the book?

Keith Richards 1992.........

The story has been reasonably well reported.

After Richards had already split with her, Keith Richards rang Linda Keith's parents and told them she had taken up with a 'black junkie'. He gave the father instructions on how to find the Cafe Wha (where Hendrix was playing). Linda's Keith's father flew to New York and collected her.

Other than that, it is said Linda Keith introduced Hendrix to Andrew Oldham in 1966 who turned him down after watching a Jimi James and the Blue Flames show. She also got the Stones to go to his show at some theatre in 1966. They were said to be unimpressed.

It was Chas Chandler who recognised Hendrix's talent.

not that Kris Needs is very reliable with the facts, but this account is how it's usually related: [linda-keith.tripod.com]
Linda also spent some time with Brian - sources differ on whether that was during or only after her relationship with Keith.
that "ward of the court" bit sounds like a drag, but at least some people who were around at the time
indicate that getting her out of the drug scene she was into was something she pretty seriously needed.

Thanks sssoul, what I find interesting is the music scene, Keith, Linda, Jimi, later Brian (wasnt he involved with her in 1968 as well?) etc. And Jimi Hendrix's rise to stardom. Didnt he "borrow" a guitar from Keith (Linda gave it to him)?

OK, I was provocing a bit, but it was not Keiths ex-girlfriend who just happened to meet Jimi, there was a split, Keith was hurt etc. Dynamics.

LoFL: so is it the music scene that interests you, or the who's-shagging-who-and-when gossip?
anyway: yes, what i'm saying is that i've read that Linda and Brian were a pair for a while
after Anita had left Brian; i've also read that they'd been fooling around while Linda was still with Keith.
i don't know if that's reliable, but exclusivity was clearly not a very high priority
for very many people in these circles at the time.

>> Didnt he "borrow" a guitar from Keith (Linda gave it to him)? <<

so the story goes (including the account i just gave a link to, if you read it).
i'm still pining for the glamourous Stonesrule's input on how much of that is accurate.

The constant repetition of this 'fact' makes me view this an attempt by an over zealous Brian fan to tar the reputation of Keith in some way. winking smiley

Typical lars material! :-()

Even if he did make such a call, is it such a bad thing to alert someones parents that their daughter is involved in some heavy drug use? Have Linda Keith or her parents been quoted saying that keith made such a call and/or described Hendrix as a 'black junkie', or dun du dddduuuuun a 'Nigger'?

Re GuitarBastard's original post and to keep it brief, I know directly from both JH and KR that they admired each other's playing. Both had busy schedules so there was no time to play "together."

Just because one reads "something" in the newspaper or in a book written by someone who never knew the primary subject of the book doesn't mean it's automatically true. Nor am I going to "dish" Linda Keith or Keith or their relationship.

I've found that through the years one sentence or word actually spoken often eventually becomes multiplied into completely inaccurate crap. If the subject is famous or dead or both.

Look at some of the posts on this board. Brian's an angel. Mick is a self-centered monster. Keith is God. Jimi was a junkie. None of those descriptions are accurate.

Re: Keith and Hendrix

er ... apologies, Stonesrule - i wasn't meaning to pry or ask you to "dish" anybody -
i'm not even sure what that means, but as far as i know it's not what i intended!
i respect your "it's baloney" assessment, just wasn't sure which part of the story it applies to.
but that's okay too.

ps: ... just for the record, my remark about exclusivity wasn't meant judgementally -
it ain't my business and it ain't my style

Linda Keith says he made that call. It's interesting because of the little drama and because it was made to Linda's father when she left Keith for Jimi. Christs sake, "is it a bad thing to alert her father"??? Eh, yeah, yes it is. It's pathetic. Lol
