Thinking about this while listening to the late great John Bonham on "Moby Dick". If the Stones did solos, do you think that Charlie could "hang" and bang out a classic solo?
I don't know. But if you think so, and be honest, don't just say so because you worship Charlie, but give examples why you think he could stand alone on stage.
I don't mean tapping a snare drum and thumping a bass drum. I'm talking about an all out drum blitz.
he has said that he enjoys hearing drum solos but personally wouldn't do one- he doesnt think thats what drumming is about - i think he said that on RS.com or the fan club dvd
who gives a crap if a drummer can do a drum solo - they should not be judged on 10 minute drum solos. i do not care if charlie could or could not do one. that does not take anything away from bonham - he was a great great drummer but not b/c he could do drum solos... sometimes, the flashiest drummers who hit the hardest are not necessarily the best. charlie has the greatest technique of any drummer, ever, and does not need to put in all that effort or movements b/c his technique is so damn unreal.... at 66, he can play as fast as drummers in their 20's, for 3 hours a night, and barely break a sweat, while still holding the backbeat for the entire band.
I hope not. But if you like drum solos and are ever in Chicago on a Monday night, check out the drummer who plays with Patricia Barber at the Green Mill...always great and interesting solos...
Monkies (and probably cats too) can do drum solos just as good as any human can- they also fling shit at you. What's so special about either of those things?
>> he has said that he enjoys hearing drum solos but personally wouldn't do one <<
actually i think what he says is that he doesn't much like listening to them either, even though some drummers he admires do them. which sounds about right to me.
A man goes to a pacific island for vacation. As the boat nears, he notices the constant sound of drumming. As he gets off the boat, he asks a native how long the drumming will go on. The native casts about nervously and says "very bad when drumming stops." Later that day, the drumming is still going and it is really starting to get to him. So, he asks another native when the drumming will stop. The native looks as if he's just been spooked. "Very bad when drumming stops," he says, and hurries off.
After a couple of days with little sleep, the man had had enough. He grabbed the first native he saw, slammed him up against a tree, and shouted, "What happens when the drumming stops?!"
Nice question but do you know any interesting 10-minute drum solo? I always skip "The mule" on the otherwise great Deep Purple album MADE IN JAPAN although Ian Paice is really a great drummer.
I also saw Charlie play the drum solo during his Massey Hall gig. I thought it was great, to in such a good venue and watch Charlie alone on stage and play for us! It was one of my favorite concert experiences. I think he used his black Gretch kit and I also noticed right away it had two floor toms, something I have not seen him use before or since. It would be great if anyone had photos or video of that night to share with us!
Iam sure he could if he wanted, (thanks god he is not into it). Many jazz drumers such as Buddy Rich,Max Roach, etc did extended solos when playing Jazz and sounded great. Listen to this
nooooo! charlie is an average drummer, but he and darryl Jones tried to get the sound together, if keith or ron wouldnt able to to this. Mick is outstanding, everytime he is doing his stuff---awsome!
"Don't go mad at the drumsolo" said Keith during the recordingsessions of Mixed Emotions in 1989. Seen in a televison special about Steel Wheels, I have it somewere on VHS but my recorder broke down. Anbody known with a Youtube clip of this special?
So he sure does some drumsolo's...... ;-)
