What if Brian was still here?
Posted by: pgarof ()

I thought i would start a new thread after starting one about the film Stoned, knowbody seemed interested, proberbly as it had been disscussed before I belonged to the forum. I just thought what if Brian had not died, would he have started another group or maybe made music with Jimi Hendrix (this was mensioned in the film, I don't know if Brian did have a call from Jimi of maybe that was fiction).

Perhaps he would have gone back to the Stones roots ,American Blues, and put together a Blues band. If he did who would have been in it, how big would they have got and would they still be around now? Another question, has there ever been a band who have been formed by the member of another band that are still going and been as big or bigger than the band they left? Now theres a question!

Robbie Williams did it but 'Take that' Split a while later although they have now reformed and proberbly are both just as popular (Not saying I like Take that although Robbie is quiet an entertainer)

Good one, Rockman!

Musically speaking, I think what Brian would be doing would depend almost entirely on whether or not he could clean up his drug habit.

I think Charlie's interview on 25x5 says it pretty well. Charlie said something like: I don't think drugs are good for anybody, but Brian just could not handle them very well.

..but (to state the obvious) Robbie didnt form a 'band'.....

Other examples - Michael jackson/The Jacksons, Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys and (to give an example of a defunct band) Diana Ross/The Supremes

Cant think theres too many who have FORMED a new band that was bigger than their old one, and where both bands are still active.

Jimmy Page accomplished that feat.

I couldn't envision BJ having any part of Steel Wheels, Dirty Work and onward...
His death was part of a weird destiny.

Yes. Don't know the details, but the band broke up while still under contract, Page got a new band together called The New Y.B.'s which later became known as Led Zeppelin.

I don't think Brian would have a thing to do with the Stones as they are now. He always wanted to try new things musically. That hasn't been a priority of the band recently.

I'd imagine he would have formed new bands and put out solo stuff here and there. Guess we'll never know.

Excellent example (you could say Clapton did too with Cream) although pgarof was looking for a current one.

Unlike Clapton though, Page didnt really LEAVE the Yardbirds, if I'm right. They split up.

brian would have left fairly close to when he did and would do what MT is doing now- still searching for musical fulfilment-followed by an ever shrinking number of fans.

Brian could have teamed up with Mick Taylor and Bill, all they would need is a drummer and singer, who could that be ?

Richie Blackmore left Deep Purple and formed Rainbow, they were BIG. and also White snake, I think the lead singer was from Deep Purple?

We also need to add Jeff Beck to the list of guitarists that left the yardbirds and went on to bigger and better things.

Other folks that come to mind ...

David Crosby left the the Byrds to join CSNY
Of course, so did everyone in CSNY.

It wasn't Bill's aim to form a bigger group. He just did
it to have some fun playing with old mates.

>> We also need to add Jeff Beck to the list <<

smile: yep, and then a couple of ex-Jeff-Beck-group cats went on to some fairly Major Success. :E

which leads neatly to someone i can't believe hasn't been mentioned yet: Steve Marriott.
although whether Humble Pie was bigger than the Small Faces depends what circles one was in at the time.
the cats he left behind didn't do half bad either - am i going in circles? that's okay, i like going in circles. :E

(love & light to Brian, and thanks & praises. i just don't get into "what if" scenarios)

Ozzy Osboure I think Black Sabath are still around!

Actually, I think Monterey Pop held the seeds to what Brian would have done had he lived longer. He really wouldn't have played much more than he did on BEGGARS or LET IT BLEED, he would have just wandered around stoned all the time getting turned on by whatever captured his fancy whether it was Hendrix, Johnny Winter, or Moroccan pipes and drums.

He would have made a helluvva talk show host. He could have rivalled David Frost and Dick Cavett. ITS SO ESOTERIC with your host, BRIAN JONES!

Joking aside, he was an amazingly talented musician who appeared largely spent the last few years of his life. Its difficult to speculate what might have happened. I doubt he could have fronted a band (the songwriting issue was as big a problem as the singing issue), but he could have hooked up with any number of other bands. Its hard not to think he was incapable of doing something extraordinary again, but you never know what might have happened if he had cleaned up. The problem I suppose is who cleaned up in 1969? You just went and burned yourself out. He's just one on a long list of casualties from the era. Survival for Brian probably meant becoming another Syd Barrett. A fair comparison I would imagine. They were both Pipers at the Gates of Dawn.

Very good responce, I agree, but what a shame and a waste of good talent.

Yup, the what if's can go on forever ...
But there's plenty of examples of folks who left one group
and went to produce good music in another setting.

To be fair to Brian, you would have to ask the same question
of Jimi and Janis and Morrison .... what might have happened...
Seems like we get the same answer..... don't know...

He may have gone on to do some more interesting projects like his Jajouka recordings, guesting on other peoples records and possibly starting up a band that would inevitably get compared to the stones.

Alexis Korner talked of Brian wanting to return to his Rhythm and Blues roots, but also wanting to get more into soprano saxophone... So perhaps a CCR with sax sound!?

First of all, he had to get his health and sanity back together...

It just wasn't meant to be. sad smiley

Brian had left the Stones before he died. Why assume he would still be doing something with them? He would probably be doing the same as Mick Taylor is doing right now.

I bet that if Brian were around he wouldnt be making music on his own-- I could see him producing world music artists---much like he did with Jojouka..
