The heat was unbearable in Budapest. After 10 minutes in the sun it made you feel physically sick. Johnny Starbuck had a thermometer on his workbench under the stage in the shade and it was 104.

What's the routine of changing the strings?
I mean, do they get some mileage out of them or need they be replaced after only one song was played with them?

i'm curious too - in the documentary on The Biggest Bang about the preparations for the Rio show,
Johnny Starbuck says all the guitars get new strings before each show, but if that list i asked about
in the first photo is a list of the ones up for re-stringing, then ... is it just part of the list, or ...?

smile: tell that to the fans who were in line outside the stadium from 9 AM onward :E

i've seen Micawber called a 53 and Malcolm called a 54, but i don't know
if that's righter than the years you've got listed for them.
the white ES-345 who's probably called Dwight seems to be from 64,
and the ebony ES-355 is from either 59 or 60, depending on who's talking.

it would be cool to pinpoint which one is Gloria!

for our blurry convenience, here's Johnny Starbuck's second list:

looks like the single-cutaway LP TV is called TV Jr (55), and the black Tele Custom is called Tele Custom :E (75);
but as we noticed earlier there seems to be something odd about at least Sonny's birthdate, so ... hm.

indeed, it would.

i came across a site where Gloria is mentioned as electrics in a '53 Tele - I guess
have a look at the last pic (scroll sidewards)
[om28.com]

asking price for this sweetie is $ 21K.........ouch!

>> have a look at the last pic <<

ahh, pornography! :E
what am i looking at, though - edit: never mind, i've figured it out - it's an instrument this shop has for sale.
so is Gloria the name of the person who inspected it? i forget what name Keith has said is inside Micawber -
some female name ... Rose? something like that :E

and ... if i can get a *little* picky with your fine list ... both Dice and TV Jr are technically LP TVs,
just different vintages, so i think we should call 'em both either TVs or TV-yellow Juniors (if you see what i mean!)
(i reckon TV-yellow Junior is clearer, even though it's not the official name ... )

ahh - these name are confusing again and again.
just looking at [www.provide.net]
still not getting anywhere...

smile: here, let me stroke your forehead, open-g honey - i'm glad i'm not the only one who gets confused :E
the way i understand the description of the TV models on that site, it boils down to:
they're TV-yellow Juniors, but officially called LP TVs (that applies to both the single-cutaways,
which are pre-58, and the double-cutaways, which are later models)

back to names of things ... on page 335 of Ronnie's book there's a setlist from Slane Castle
with the names of Ronnie's guitars for each number written in - naturally Slane is one show
i don't seem to have many photos from, for some reason, and some of the more intriguing instrument names
are on numbers Ronnie switched guitars on from show to show. but maybe we can work out which is which:

Start Me Up: Blond = a poetic name for his blond Strat :E
You Got Me Rocking: Z = the diskfront Zemaitis
Rough Justice: ditto
All Down the Line: NO = Rich/WeSellGuitars has identified the "New Old" as one of Ronnie's 50s sunburst Strats
Dead Flowers: Red B-Bender
YCAGWYW: Custom Z = the metalfront Zemaitis (found it on youtube:

Midnight Rambler: Slash = the black Les Paul??
I'll Go Crazy: Blue Lite = the new Versoul
Tumbling Dice: BBB = black b-bender
You Got the Silver: 12-string slide acoustic = the teal-blue buddy
Wanna Hold You: Jesse Ed = the Les Paul TV Special (thanks hummingbird!)
Miss You: 55 Strat
It's Only Rock & Roll: D'Arm = Dan Armstrong
Satisfaction: ditto
Honky Tonk Women: BBB = black b-bender again
Sympathy: Arthur ... i can't believe i don't have any photos of Ronnie during Sympathy from this year - help!
Paint It Black: Sitar = the Coral/Danelectro sitar-guitar
JJFlash: Simpladious ... [scratching head] ... eureka! the Zemaitis Terzetto:

Brown Sugar: Custom Z (see YCAGWYW)

peering real hard at some really sorry-quality youtube clips of Sympathy at Slane:
is Arthur Ronnie's LP TV Special??

Re: names of things

LoFL! so much for Ronnie's annotated setlists -
he used the black b-bender for Dead Flowers at Slane:

so maybe Red B-Bender is his poetic name for that one, and BBB is the red one :E

With all respect to Mr. Starbuck, I thought Dave Rouze worked Wood's guitars.

apparently Johnny Starbuck's job is stringing/tuning all the guitars -
that's what the ABB documentary on the Rio show implies, anyway

I think Ronnie's LP TV Special is the one called Jesse Ed, cause Jesse Ed Davis gave it to him. Sa the guitar called Slash was given by...

ah so - thank you hummingbird! i recognized who Jesse Ed refers to,
but i didn't know he'd given Ronnie one of my favourite Ronnie Guitars.
i'll edit the list accordingly ... now which one would Arthur be??

um ... yeah i know Ronnie's brother's name (love & light to Art!) -
the question is which of his guitars is nicknamed Arthur

staggered locking Sperzel Tuners?

The tuners on the well known Teles are staggered locking Sperzel Tuners, aren't they?
I believe Mathijs mentioned it sometime.
when did they come into action?
around Exile time, Micawber sported original slotted Klusons - right?
were there any Schaller tuners mounted inbetween?

Very probably I'd have thought...when were the locking Sperzels first made ?

interesting to see a Collings on the list.
i wonder if Keith is using a dreadnought or one of the smaller orchestra models; they are amazing acoustic guitars...
wondering also if they customized it with a pickup of some kind, and if so what did they use...i've seen lots of shots of Keith using Sunrise pickups in his acoustics in past years...but wonder what his setup is now; that was the only acoustic i saw on johnny's list there...
hmmmm, anybody know the details on the AG?

ahh thank you for taking an interest in that one! i'm not sure it's Keith's, though;
there are also some of Ronnie's guitars on that list, or of course it might be Mick's.
here's their site: [www.collingsguitars.com]

in case it helps someone recognizes a Collings, some of Keith's acoustics are partly visible in the rear here:

as long as i'm at it: Ronnie's Gibson J200s and Mick's Taylors:
