Favorite Live Version - You Can't Always Get What You Want

OK, here's one that has been swilling around in my head for some time. As I have told JR on numerous occasions, I would be fine if I never saw another live version of some Stones' songs, even though I love the song in studio/LP, live, or both.

One that comes to mind, and this will be a series, is YCAGWYW. I absolutely think that it, along with Gimme Shelter, were the perfect songs to start and end the LP that was the Stones' final look at the 60s. That said, I really like the studio YCAGWYW, but many, if not most, live versions do not crank my tractor.

All this aside, what is your favorite live version (date and location, please!) of YCAGWYW. Mine happens to be the Rock & Roll Circus version, but I want to hear yours.

Have fun, and more to come.

The L&G version.

The descending line that Taylor plays after every refrain of the chorus is like manna from heaven.

The song takes on a decidedly melancholy tone, moreso than any other live version. yet is able to remain surprisingly tender.

I enjoy it everytime I hear it quite honestly as it's a great feel good singalong...

If I had to rank the one's I enjoyed LIVE the best I'd have to say:

1. Hartford CT, 1981
2. Fenway Park Boston MA, 2005 tour opener
3. Aloha Stadium Honolulu Hawaii 1998

I've heard it other times and enjoyed it but those three times stand out a little more...

Hands down my fave is from Lets spend the Night Together. The tone that Ronnie has during the solo is the mother of all great guitar tones. That is what a guitar SHOULD sound like.

I love the LOVE YOU LIVE version - Paris, 1976 - cause Mick speaks French to the crowd during the sing-a-long part which I find much easier to deal with....

the studio version is the one that has my heart -
that thing Jimmy Miller does on that hi-hat (i think it's the hi-hat) in the build-up
to where it goes into doubletime (or whatever) is so perfect & loony!
it sets that whole change up so brilliantly, and that change is what (for me)
tends not to always work real great in concert.

but i did witness a couple of performances in 06 when they really went and got it;
and the Rock & Roll Circus rendition, of course, is a piece of forever.

I havn't seen it done as the album with an accustic guitar and choir, that would be how I'd like to see it live.

There's so many of them that every pick is extremely "personal"...

Philadelphia '72 (Philadelphia Special - the passionate, sweaty one)
Paris '76 (Love You Live - first live version I heard, Ronnie's solo floored me)
Detroit '75 (Missing Jewels - great intro)

The Hague 29 May 1976 - great RW/KR playing during the instrumental break....

Houston 25 June 72 (1st show) - Ladies and Gentlemen version but as remixed on the 'Good Time Women' vinyl boot.

Brussels Affair.

1-Brussels 1973 / London 1973 (tie - Rock and Roll music never reached a higher plane)
2-Fort Worth 1972 (L&G) / New York-MSG 1972 (tie)
3-Rock and Roll Circus 1968 (so emotional and reduced to the essentials)

WORST EVER - Love You Live version. Ronnie Wood butchers a sacred lament with the most direction-less, banal, uncreative fret-meandering ever heard, turning it into a dirge and murdering the momentum the song had built to that point. Jagger finishes the bloody deed with inane bi-lingual sing-alongs. A sacrilege.

i really love all the versions from 72 to 81 tour. but I think 72 was the best sounding. I really like how Niki Hopkins and Jim Price and bobby keys contributed to the overall sound.

It has to be the Brussels Affair version.

The Love You Live debacle is a lesson on how NOT to play a guitar solo. Add to that, the dreadful synthesiser during the opening bars, and you have what was once a classic lament, turned into little more than a tacky, sprawling, and utterly woeful dirge. The sing-along just adds insult to injury; even Slade would turn in their armchairs at the banality of it all.

If only it were "Mama, We're all Crazy Now" that they wanted us all to join in with. But it isn't.

It's a sing-along to a dirge for chrissakes!!!

Yes, it's such a shame that they released that Paris version of YCAGWYW, it's even slaughtered - they edited the song with 4-5 minutes.

In 1975 was a real highlight, in 1976 - it was a shadow.
Some of the greatest solos by any Stone, was Ronnie on several of the YCAGWYW's performed in 1975
