Black and blue sleeve

this is the return of the faces (ah ah !! right in your face) on sleeve.

They seem in anger. You could hope a very rock'n'roll LP. But... hot stuff, crazy mama, Negrita, cherry oh baby, full to cry, mm, ... where is the rebel music ?

this is really a slow tempo album.

Have you never been surpised by this paradox ?

black and blue isnt my favourite album.

they could have added some outtakes from the 70,s to it.

they obviously had this material cos most of it turned up on tattoo you.

i like crazy mama and memory motel.

the rest is waffle.

Great production, wonderful songs but lacks two real gems. Hot Stuff, Hey Negrita, Memory Motel, Hand of fate are truly great, some of their best material imo. And the videos? So cool. Look at Keith chewing the riff on Hot Stuff.
Fool is good but Cherry oh baby is pure crap. Crazy Mama is good. But they needed more songs. It's their best EP. I love it.

Black & Blue is a freakin ~*beautiful*~ album, right from the amazing first sound on it.
can't get enough :E

Great album. Very interesting rhytms, new influences (reggea, jazz, funk) Beautiful guitar sounds (of course from the guests, too). One of my favourite. Cherry Oh Baby is great, I also love the live version from MSG 1975.

Yeah, it needed 3 more songs, take CHERRY OH BABY off of it and then it might have been a great one. CRISS CROSS MIND could have gone on here as an outtake. I think SLAVE was from this period, what else was around that ended up on TATTOO YOU?

BTW, don't think they look angry on the cover, just THERE, not much emotion at all (a better cover than EMOTIONAL RESCUE i must say, slightly above average IMHO....

Always a favourite album of mine but Cherry Oh Baby is a big mistake - white men cannot do reggae - leave it alone

Yes, I thought about it, he's great on it but the songs is just not good.

A beautifully RECORDED album, but when youve only 8 songs, they need to all cut the mustard and for me, barely half of them do.

Memory Motel is a masterpiece, even though I know some folks on here (Nikkibong!) hate it.

As for that sleeve..one of my favourites. I'm a bit of a traditionalist in that I like BAND photos on an album sleeve. Charlie's 'east end villain' look is a classic. There's some other great pics from those photo sessions which capture a look in Keith's eyes that would suggest he's just stepped out of hell for the afternoon.

White men cant do 'reggae'? Nonsense. The Clash were terrific at it, and the Stones have their moments too. Keith's lived long enough in Jamaica and worked with enough reggae musicians to have forgotten more about reggae than most 'black' artists will ever know.

No. The album's title is a good indication of it's musical content

just a few artists are able to pratice the art of playing several kind of musics. The Stones of course are one of them : reggae, rock, dance, r'nb ...
like the french Serge Gainsbourg did : classics songs, inventing the talkover, playing reggae with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare and so much more...

One of my favorites now.......always loved
Cherry Oh Baby, Hey Negrita, Hand of Fate...
...grew to LOVE Memory Motel.....like Crazy Mama
but thought the mix was a bit muddy.

I can understand how people that want
10 variations of Brown Sugar might not immediately
embrace Black & Blue....but that's ok, eventually
(if you give it a chance) you'll grow to appreciate it.

The entire album has a consistent feel (IMO).

I like the album art...don't LOVE IT but I like the idea
of the front to back band photo.....& their expressions (or lack
thereof)...should have been called "STONED".

I guarantee that Keith doesn't remember that photo session. winking smiley

Did MEMORY MOTEL get much radio airplay when the album came out in the mid '70s?
Did they play it on tour back then?

First heard it after I bought Black & Blue (1980) and
didn't hear it live until '94 VL Tour.

The drumsound (snare) is fantastic. Therefore alone it´s a great album!

It didn't get any radio airplay in my neck of the woods. They didn't play it live until the VOODOO LOUNGE tour. They did rehearse it in 1978 as heard on The Woodstock Tapes. The song's a masterpiece and way up there on my list of all-time favorites.

Helter....haven't seen that Canon (yet). How's your new office coming along?
I like my Nikon D2Xs. Nikon finally introduced a full frame sensor (D3X..I think).
Finally...a wide angle is a wide angle again.

re: inside photo....oh yeah, i know what you're sayin'
but how often is there an entire thread about the Black & Blue "sleeves"? winking smiley
Are they writing some sort of numerical code with those
flashlights? 9 - 8 - 0 - 3 ....and I don't know what Mick's doing. (an exclamation point?)

9,803 ?? The number of teenagers Bill Wyman poked?

One strong point in the sleeve is that is has got Mick's right eye at the back. Try to put 20 in a row a you'll see the effect.

Re: Black and blue sleeve

I think Black and Blue is a very creative album.

Now one of my favorites, but didn´t like it, when it was released - guess I was too young and didn´t understand. Fool to cry was played a lot on the radio as far as I remember, but the album itself wasn´t rated that high as nobody expected that stuff from the Stones at that time.

Also like the cover a lot, but I think it´s too focused on Mick.
