Here's a cool one I thought of - which Stones' song should've been a single, but was never released as a single? I know this is tough, and I can hear the controversy arise, i.e. "well, it was a b-side" or "it was released as a single in live form later on..." or "it WAS a single in Leichtenstein and in Malaysia"

All that aside, while there are some choices more obvious than others, the one that always stood out for me was Dance Little Sister, which I happen to think is one of the most perfect examples of a Rolling Stones' song, and should have been an A-side.

I think Miss Amanda Jones would have been a good single, considering it's a great uptempo song with a classic Stones sound (one of few with Berry-influences in '67) *and* catchy pop melodies. I like it a lot better than Let's Spend The Night Together.

Actually, I can't really come up with too many songs that would have fit as singles that weren't singles. There are of course plenty of awsome album tracks, but few of them would've had the commercial potential as singles. Just look at Exile ... it's the best album in rock history, but not something you'd image hearing on top ten radio.

Didn't know about the US release, but in the UK it was only a cash-in released after they left Decca.

Heartbreaker was a single in the US. Charted reasonably high too, I think. During the 70s they only tended to release one single in the UK from an album, whereas the US got two (and then for "Some Girls", the UK got two singles (Miss You/Respectable) whereas the US got three (Miss You/Beast of Burden/Shattered).

In the 60s' it wasnt the done thing to release singles that were going to be available on albums

plus: She Saw Me Coming could have filled the long break in time between the releases of RFD and Biggest Mistake. Or were they thinking that MTV had scared away all the indie rock fans from the 90s by then?

Some of the 60's favourites couldv'e easily been singles.

Play With Fire, Heart Of Stone (released in the US, I know), I'm Free, Under My Thumb etc, even As Tears Go By.

Post 68 I think they just about got it right in terms of what they chose as singles.

I really couldn't imagine the likes of Gimmie Shelter as a 45rpm.
