Benchmark Stones Shows

What shows come to mind? Hyde Park, Altamont, Brussels ('cause of the famous boot), Copacobana Beach, St. Petersburg, Phoenix '81 (the movie & the honky tonk women) Vegas (the day Mick's dad died). These are a few that come to my mind. Is the list too long & too subjective? Or does Rockman or Gazza or bv have a list of a dozen or so shows that should be at the top?

Paris Olympia, Licks and O2 23rd Aug. Hands down, easy, no contest....what do I know? I've only seen 11 shows and I've been to both of the above....Lucky or what?

Everybody here is qualified to answer, that's why I posted. But some people may be more qualified than others. Those three came to mind as much more qualified than I am. Please take no offense & tell us what you think.

I'm not worthy of the compliment, but here goes

Musical 'benchmark' is far too subjective to assess, but most 'significant'...

Off the top of my head -

Marquee 12.7.62
The Hague 8.8.64
Hyde Park '69 (all time winner IMO)
MSG '69
Altamont '69
Moscow '98
SARS '03
Rio '06
Shanghai '06

Since the 60's, the significance has been more to do with the scale or high profile nature of the event or the cultural/historical significance in playing in previously uncharted territory

For me these are a few that come to my mind as standouts:

Oakland 69
Leeds 71
Texas 72
LA 75
Roseland 2002

stones "benchmarks" /shows i attended....

'89 Steel Wheels rolls into Alpine Valley (smallest venue on the tour..i think)
and i was front row for 2 of 3 shows.....they announced the 3rd date a month
after the first 2. (these were my first 2 shows..$35 per ticket)

'94 Stones played Madison WI and Keith paid homage to Otis Redding.
He died when his plane crashed into a Madison lake...it's marked.

'97 Stones played Madison again....got engaged to my wife afterward.
There's more to that story but...

'99 No Security Tour comes to Milwaukee...first show in Milw since 1975.

'05 Stones (Milwaukee) play special WAITING ON A FRIEND for New Orleans (TV).

'06 Stones play Soldier Field in Chicago.....coldest show ever! Band wore
layers and layers of winter clothing and huddled near Charlies drums....
combination of arthritis and frigid weather (major windchill) Keith
had some real problems. Still a great show...first SHE WAS HOT.
Definitely memorable..and benchmark shows to me. winking smiley

IORR............but I like it!

In recent history, the 2002 Toronto pre-Licks gig comes to mind. The willingness to go into uncharted territory was evident right here, and the next few years' mega-tours showed this to be true, setlist whiners notwithstanding. Every decade was represented, from the 60s to the 2000s -- this point is commonly overlooked.

Personally, the first and last Stones shows I saw are benchmarks.

LA Coliseum 1981

Nijmegen 2007

Other than that, I'd say Altamont.."The end of the '60's" as they say.

That was in 1969 smiling smiley

Prague 1990 should maybe be added.

Maybe also Kentucky 1975, where the police threatened to arrest the stones if they performed Starfvcker. They played it of course

MSG '72 in general, the birthday show in particular. History was being made. They haven't been the same since that tour, I think it took something out of them and the peaks were out of sight, in the clouds....

CasinoBoogie brought up a good one re NME show 1968. Ya might say Stones were throwing down the gauntlet as to how much they were going to continue to be counted at the top.

However, benchmarks really don't work for music. Because great performances don't fit neatly into boxes labeled "Altamont," "Hyde Park" etc.

Anyone who saw any of the Stones gigs concerts in 1969 and 1970, with exception of the two noted above, knows they saw and heard very wonderful shows.

Age is a factor re selecting benchmarks. And everyone has a right to think the first time they saw the band that it was special.

I wasn't at Olympia 2003 but I know in my heart it was a "benchmark," and I had wanted so much to be there. 2500 screaming Europeans can't be wrong, ya know!
