Finally I bought Satanic on CD today!

I have vinyl LP with 3-D cover of course, but since I don't have record player anymore I haven't listen to it for ages. Today I had a chance to listen to Their Satanic Majestes Request again and I was stunned how good it was. Sure, "Sing This Song Together" may sound a bit silly but it gets only better from that point. "Citadel" has a strong riff, "In Another Land" has beautiful harpsichord parts. "2000 Man" has some good lyrics (in the age of the Internet the verse "I am having an affair with a random computer" may sound almost prophetic). I actually dig "See What Happens" jam - it's so psychodelic. B side (yeah, I still can't get used to the fact that albums have only one side today) apart from well known "She's A Rainbow" and "2000LYFH" has some good moments too. "The Lantern" is quite gloomy and in "Gomper" you can clearly hear Jajouka inspirations. This was probably the last Stones song so heavily influenced by Brian Jones. I'm glad to hear it again.

the lantern is an odd song to me. When I first heard it I had the flu, and whenever I hear it it reminds me of having a fever.

congratulations on your fine purchase! Satanic Majesties is full of positively riveting groundwork
for great things to come - hark to the guitar on Citadel & The Lantern! beautiful
plus which: the album sounds freakin *magnificent* when you're 250 meters underground :E

Coincidently I listened to it this morning....i like it
quite a bit. Not a big fan of "Sing This" but I really like
Citadel / 2000 Man / 2000 Light Years / She's a Rainbow ...and
even In Another Land.

Are 2000 Light Years & She's A Rainbow the only 2 they've played live.
Did they play SHe's A Rainbow? Now I can't remember.

Yep. They played 2000 Years in 89-90 and She's A Rainbow during B2B tour as a "web choice".

satanic majesties is a good album.

although voted one of the worst by members of this board.

she,s a rainbow
citadel
on with the show
2000 man
2000 light years from home
in another land

are the best from the album.

That's right....I sort of remember She's a Rainbow being played
on the B2B tour. I think that was the same time period that
Apple COmputers was using it in their tv commercials.

I think the "web choice" for the show I attended was Gimme Shelter.

Wasn't Gimme Shelter a regular song in 97-98 setlists?
Anyway, back to the topic: had Satanic been produced better it would be more apprieciated today in my opinion.

(IMO) maybe but probably not.......it was released during one of the strongest
periods of their career when they had hit after hit after hit.....nothing
on Satanic sounded like anything they'd done before.....no obvious stand-outs
for radio play. No hits. They could afford to be experimental.

I think...had they left off the obviously weak tracks (Sing This & On With the Show)
and not tried to jump on the Beatles psychadelic band-wagon....it may have been
received better. Instead it was always weak in comparison to Sgt Peppers etc...

Maybe that's what you meant by "produced better".....better guidance (?) or
do you mean technically produced better (?)

It's the other way around for me - I bought Love You Live on vinyl today, a 1977 pressing that was never played before. So obviously I'm not gonna play it either.

I meant production in terms of sound. If I'm not mistaken it was still recorded on 4-tracks which sounds a bit archaic today. 4-tracks could be ok with simpler songs like they did in early 60s but when you try to add more instruments and achieve more advanced and richer sound you're limited technically. However, Sgt. Pepper was also recorded on 4-track equipment but George Martin managed to obtain the sound that was ahead of its time. I think The Rolling Stones lacked good producer after Andrew had left them and they were forced to produce the album themselves. Maybe they should have hired someone else to do this work.

Too much pot & acid, too less touring the basic probs, maybe.

Anyway, the most underrated of their albums imho.

Citadel ought to be up there with the warhorses.

Sittin On A fence? - & Dandelion?

A double: Majesties - Buttons, wouldnt it be nice?
Buttons suffers even more imho from bad production.

Glad to hear that. Just bought a new one :-)
And I'm glad to report that vinyl has returned to the largest chain of record stores here and that more and more stores gets more and more vinyl :-)

Terrible album. Good effect on their later work, though.

Child of the Moon...GREAT IDEA!

We Love You...too.

Do you think that they actually thought SING THIS ALL TOGETHER
was one of the strongest tracks? Afterall..1st song on an
album is usually considered "strong". Was it supposed to be like
an "All You Need Is Love" sing-along?

Yes Imagine album adding Chilf Of The Moon & We Love You & Dandelion & subtracting See what happens & On With The Show & Gomper. It would of been much better I think overall. Rainbow, light years, 200 Man, Citadel, Lantern, In another land with the added 3 tracks becomes a very very good album. MEZ

it was played very often......in the show i saw (Madison WI)
i'm almost certain it was the internet vote (song #10 in the show).
i was hoping for something like STAR STAR or SHE'S LIKE A RAINBOW.
no luck.

Mick had a sore throat that night...and kept apologizing (sounded good to me)...
..they dropped 2 songs i think. 24 to 22 i think. 22 became the norm on
the US leg. Was happy to see Crazy Mama onthe b-stage. winking smiley

Oh, you're right! At the very beginning of the tour it was among voted songs but it was added to the main set after winning a couple of times in a row. (Gazza's setlist site is such an invaluable source winking smiley )

I consider Satanic to be a good album. It could have been EVEN better if -

1. They'd added Child Of The Moon, We Love You and Dandelion.

2. Got rid of Sing This All Together(See What Happens) and Gomper.

3. Let Mick Jagger do the singing on In Another Land and therefore giving Bill more time to bang yet a couple of ladies.

A fan of Their Satanic Majesties Request huh? Then have a look in here:

If you like the album, you really should check out the two excellent Satanic Sessions box sets! It shows how the actual album could have been much stronger had they eased up on the overdubbing and maybe completed some other song ideas.

Obviously, 1967 was one of the worst years for The Rolling Stones, so what they released is rather amazing considering the shit going on! smiling smiley

If only the American record companies had been allowed to meddle with TSMR and replaced the Sing This songs with the We Love You single...

absolutely agree.
actually i like Mick's contribution on that song.....maybe Keith should be
on main vocals.

i think bill wrote it...but so what. obviously he doesn't have a voice or they
wouldn't have hidden it behind that psychadelic gargling. winking smiley

>> or they wouldn't have hidden it <<

the effects on the vocal were Bill's idea -
and obviously "they" decided Bill's singing suits this track just fine.

let go of their ears - they're the Rolling Stones, and we're not :E

How about an all-'67 B-stage set?
