LOVE YOU LIVE - How they play IORR

This to me is the best version of IORR they do...

Any guitarists out there please: Does anyone know if it's in open G and whether a capo is used, which position the chords are played in? Any help appreciated!

Many thanx

...in the Paris 76 video you can see that Keith is playing his Zemaitis,....in those days he plays a lot stuff in open G.
A few weeks ago I watch the Paris 76 video and nearly 75% of the songs he uses an 5 string open G,....

..I wonder why ,....

IORR has a lot of Chuck Berry style licks, and they are usually easier to play in standard tuning because of the double stops on the 1st and 2nd string. So my guess is that it is not in open G tuning.

...you´re right ,....but in Paris ´76 Keith DID play a 5 string during IORR,...

I wonder about this too when I recognized it ...

It's a fantastic version - and the reason is that it's from Toronto 75 - not 1976

Open G.
capo @ 4th position (key of B ).

it was also played in a lower key (G iirc) on some shows during the 75/76 tour, but it works a lot better in B.

best version to me too.

I didn´t say that the LYL version is from Paris ;-)
,... but you can clearly see in the video that he played it in open G on this tour

Yeah......the original version is in standard and Keith does it live today (since '89) in standard but the '75 version was in open G with a capo at the 4th fret and then in '76, he started doing it in open G without a capo.

I really like the LYL version. theres somethign about it to me that sounds like its being played in a small club. I always thought it was from El mocambo but I'll take your guys word for it that its from toronto 75.

also, the knebworth version is prety hot IMO.

Could someone who has a little patience and compassion for the rhythmically retarded explain this whole Open G stuff?

I don't play guitar. I just want to be able to have a rudimentary understanding of the concept.

And if Keith invented this style of playing, I'd like to know that, too.

The ancient art of weaving, on the other hand, I get.

Greatest version but I guess there are overdubs like the intro.

I compared the LYL version once with the Outsider Bird Toronto '75 bootleg, and I couldn't detect any overdubs other than Wood's and Richards added backup vocals.

OK! Didnt know that. The intro on iorr was weird in 1975, he either messed it up or just changed it.

Open G is a way to tune the guitar so that if you play all open strings, it is a G chord. The same for other open tunings, such as open E and open D. These are used a lot by blues musicians. It is especially useful when playing slide guitar, because you don't need finger acrobatics to change the chord, you just move the slide up and down the neck.

Keith didn't invent it, but I think it was his idea to remove the lowest (thickest) string, so that the lowest note is a G, and not a D.

Always loved that version too.
Partly it has to do with the drumming as well.
Originally Kenny Jones did the the nice (kind of "turned around") drumming.

Charlie could never play it that way. But on some occasions (f.e.here) it's a bit reminiscent of the original studio version.
If Charlie has a good day it always shows! He plays those little extra beats and those versions are always great!
The guitar is good as well and I always liked the backingvocs!(Thought they were live . .)

The problem is:

Keith plays Chuck Berry licks in that tune and they are played in standard tuning, but we know that he played IORR in open tuning. This leaves us with two possibilities:

1. He plays the Berry licks in a very unusal way. Like in the solo he would not only use his index finger.

2. The high E string is in standard tuning.

What's right?

Check it: (LA Forum '75)
Looks like standard; probably same arrangement/tuning as Toronto version of LYL

Yes, I think it's safe to say that LYL IORR is in standard tuning. It's very unlikely that those Berry licks were played in open G.

5-string banjo's are tuned like this (without the low E-string) since the 1880's. My guess is that Keith got the idea from Ry Cooder completely.

Both the LA and Toronto versions ARE in open G (check the capo on the fourth fret on the LA video). Keith doesn't play standard Berry bends, he adjusts them for open G. On the high E and B strings he uses his pinky on the 9th position to from the E/B double stop. The rest of the bends are on d B and G strings, and are don ith on finger. Listen with headphones to LYL: Keith actually 'tricks' you in making you think he is playing standard Berry stops, but he isn't. Also, Ron Wood ads those Berry style stops here and there, making the song sound very much Berry influenced.

Mathijs, does he use a capo then if it's open G? Just wondering the fret position the other chord runs are played in. Thanks

At least Around and around 1976 version is in open tuning.

Also the LYL version of iorr has vocal overdubs (the chorus).
