the 4 stages of excess

No. 1 - those who died too soon:
Jim Morrison, Hendrix etc.
We know them all too well

No. 2 - those who "got out just in time"
Aerosmith (all of em), Malcolm Young,Stevie Nicks, Alice Cooper, Clapton
the rehab team

No. 3 - those who learned to moderate:
Neil Young, Noel Gallagher,Rod Stewart

No. 4 - those who never learn:
Lemmy, Shane MacGowan, Willie Nelson

Would it be fair to say the Stones have em all:
No. 1 - Brian
No.2 - Ronnie
No 3 - Mick
No. 4 - Keith

Who else would you put in these categories?

I was just thinking that Keith in his own way has moderated. he knows his limits, but yeah, i get what you mean now. I mean, hes still the only one that really gets wasted regulary it seems. he still hans't changed in a lot of ways.

And there are those for whom indulgence may be one of the key components of their prowess and success...

Like Barry Bonds or Keith Richards.

I think I'm about to invent a 5th stage. Not sure what it is yet. But if anybody can find it. It's me.

I think the effort to organize it 1-4 (and imply that each Stones' drug use vastly differs from the other) is just too simple. For instance, Keith is 3 and 4. And I would add Ronnie to 4, joining Keith, because of their continued smoking and drinking. And if you're going to put Ronnie as "getting out just in time"--I mean, do have you a story to back that up? Didn't Keith "get out just in time" as well (e.g. Toronto drug bust in 1977)?

Well at least I had enough sense to listen to Elmo, when he told me about Tinsley Ellis. Now that was good stuff.

It seems as though the Who cover all 4 stages:
1. Keith Moon
2. Pete Townshend (in the early 80s)
3. Roger Daltrey (who cut back his excesses early)
4. Entwistle (who never learned and it killed him)

Brian Wilson is No. 2.
