Waiting on a Friend bar

What was the name and where is the bar where they filmed Waiting on a Friend?

I am in NY for a couple of days and want to check it out.

St Marks Bar & Grill....think its on St Marks Place/Bowery or thereabouts...I'm sure one of the New Yorkers on here can give you the exact details

I'm pretty sure the bar is no longer there however, not under that name anyhow.

St. Marks Bar and Grill was on St. Marks and 2nd Ave. (I think). It no longer exists, but was a great hangout for a good long while. I had lots of strange nights and odd experiences there. That it is gone is kind of a benchmark for me as to how much the city has changed.

There's a new bar in it's place - can't think of the name but it's one of those one-word abstract pretentious titles...

The new place blows but at least you'll be able to get a sense of just how small the original bar was.

The bar is still there. It is called The Tribe. Open during evenings. If you walk inside you may be a feel of the guys hanging around there...

At least it is still a bar unlike the unspeakably criminal fate of the Chelsea Drug Store, which is now a ****ing McDonalds!

Also, as has been mentioned here previously, the building Mick is standing in front of while waiting for Keith is the same building as the cover of Physical Graffiti.

St Marks Place no. 96 is the exact address where Mick is standing.

I go there every time I am in NYC. East Village is very relaxing when you have been further up on Manhattan for a while enjoying the buzz there. By the way there used to be a great bakery with the name Sticky Fingers just across the street from the Tribe bar but last time I was there it was gone. They used to have the best hot chockolate in town. Now only memories.

After one of the '89 shows i went to I went back to the St. Marks Bar and grill for a couple of beers with my cousin. We sat at the bar, there was virtually no ne else in there. the band was playing some good blues and Stones like R&B. For some crazy reason, we both had the feeling the Stones were going to walk in for a post concert drink.

But, alas, it never happened.

I spent many a night there in the late 80' and early 90's. They usually had good music, nary a cover, save for a hat being passed a round after each set, and a great picture of the Stones painted on the wall--the inside cover of sticky fingers. i remember once they repainted the walls but left that mural untouched, as well they should have!

my girl friend lives right down the street....very cool...

In 1981, I lived down the street from there. I was tipped me off that day about the shoot. I was lucky and got to watch a bit.

WOW...

those are fantastic Shillid! I like the way Wyman is looking at the blonde in the white, you can only imagine what he might have been up to. Is that Stu in the first picture wearing a blue shirt? Mick and Keith were actually late 30's there! I often think of how they were only 35 when I first saw them in '78 at Anaheim, everyone saying Last Tour. Then when they made the come back tour in '89, they were 46, and here they are still goiing 18 years later...who could have guessed it!

I found it.

St. Marks Place, for those who don't know, is a street in New York City, in the part called East Village. I lived nearby for several years, in the 80s. It was a wild place ... I'll bet it was really crazy there in the 60s and 70s.

Of course St Marks is where the Stones shot the WOAF video, even using same doorway as Led Zeppelin had used for Physical Graffiti. Many of you know my story... that I was very lucky and got tipped-off that day and watched the Stones outside.

Another day as I walked along St. Marks place, the street had turned into a set once again. I asked a working photographer what film they were shooting, and he told me that it was a film starring a little-known singer named Madonna. I turned to the person I was with, who said something like "I think I've heard of her." I said that I had heard of her too. Another time I also walked right into the shoot of "Matter Of Trust" (by Billy Joel). I'm visible in one or two frames of that one actually.

We had dinner in the EV a few months ago, and it seemed like a completely different place from the East Village that I remembered. I felt out of place. I could see however that it had exactly the same colorful appeal and was as full of youth as it had back when I lived there.

And there's a great Replacements song about Alex Chilton (singer/songwriter from the Box Tops and Big Star) that mentions St. Mark's Place.

Apparently the line "Checkin' his stash by the trash at St. Mark's place" came from a real life incident when Chilton was staying somewhere on St. Mark's place and had his stash hidden outside under a dumpster. Paul Westerberg of the Replacements went to meet him and the first thing he saw was Chilton, outside rooting around under the dumpster, checking his stash. Anyway, here're the lyrics:

In the late sixties and early seventies this was the place to be.
My hang out there on st Marks pl was the Electric Circus,there l saw the Stogees,Ike and Tina Turner,plus a whole bunch of other bands, l used to be there every Fri and Sat night,a couple of years ago l went back there to see my daughter who was living there,l hated it, now is just another tourist trap..
For me, great memories..

As a New Yorker I knew the area by reputation, in person from 1991 to present, and had been to the bar where our boyos played.

I even worked as a bartender nearby at a place -- or armpit -- called Downtown Beirut. It was truly a dump!

Yes the area still has youthful vitality, but has changed and been cleaned up a bit.
