I'm afraid there's nothing we can do about it...

Gimme Shelter has everything...
It's simply a sum of every little bit of the Stone's music

after that we still have a thousand songs to have fun eith...

BTW, has everybody count' them all ?

Let It Loose wins the #1 spot for me but Gimme Shelter would be in my top ten; Wild Horses, Shine A light, and even Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend The Night Together are up there on the list! Way too many incredible songs to pick ONE!

My 19 year old says it's Sympathy for the Devil and that Gimme Shelter comes close ;-)

Gimme Shelter is or was (unfortunatly, they kicked it our of their setlist) one of my favorite songs in their live shows, because I liked it very much as Sir Mick Jagger sung in duet with Miss Lisa Fischer.

But I reckon this 19 y o aims at SFTD in studio?

Best song?
Sympathy for the Devil. The congas, Nicky's piano, Keith's riffs, Mick's dark history of mankind, all in less than 6 minutes, I think.

It's always great on stage, as well.

But SFTD is a bit too much on BB. The live version that I downloaded years ago on dc++ from LA ( i think it is) 1975 is great. The live version from Altamont stunning.
But, when you have to pick one song that is perfect from the first second and that represents everything about this band, a song that never grows old, a song you dont want to stop, Gimme Shelter is the one. It is the perfect rock song.

Gimme Shelter or Jumping Jack Flash. There's no first and second, simply both. The two greatest songs in rock hystory.

Yes, but if you have to chose one which one? I think JJF might come out as childish although i love the studio version. Gimme Shelter is more "real" more "mature", a complete piece of art.
JJF is Für Elise and Gimme Shelter is the 9th.
Schubert is of course better but if you compare songs...

really don't know la forum..cuz the the first 30 seconds of JJF almost make me cry every time i listen to it..just perfect. Gimmie Shelter got everything too. Fur sure in 68-69 the ispiration was in the air!

JJF can't be compared to Für Elise, not even in a joke

JJF is better than Für f-in Elise, of course, but, F.E compared to 9th is a bit like JJF compared to Gimme Shelter. OR wait, no it's not. F.E would have to Satisfaction. You're right.

actually - I can't split Gimme Shelter & Jumping Jack Flash as the band's best song...

Re: Their best song: Gimme Shelter

The best song (writing and performance in studio) is IMO Moonlight Mile. My favourite however, is If You Can't Rock Me.

Mine too but I cant honestly say that it is their best song, objectively speaking.

6. Sway

Changes all the time but for me I reckon HTW. It seems to sum up everything about the stones in one song (country, blues, rock n roll, open g, sleazy) and has a great sing along chorus. I just love that first tom tom fill in the intro - a stroke of genius. So simple but so so powerful!

Re: Their best song: Gimme Shelter

Some explanation:
1. Gimme Shelter - best song ever made
2. Jumpin' Jack Flash - best rock song ever made
3. Brown Sugar - second best rock song ever made
4. Street Fighting Man &
5. Sympathy For The Devil - imagine it's 1968 and you hear those two song for the first time. Must be mindblowing. Unfortunately I'm from 1971.
6. Sway - Taylor! Especially the fade in the solo is genius, makes you beg for more (someone else here on IORR said this before, totally agree with that). Great vocals from Jagger, great drum rolls from Charlie, mostly not in place, but it fits.
7. Rocks Off - best album opener ever.
8. Let It Loose - best Stones ballad.
9. Coming Down Again - best Keith song. The 2 saxes in the solo are great.
10.Torn And Frayed - love this country song, great feeling.

Yes, but i beg to differ. It's a nice choice but to me that's like picking Start me up. Standard formula and a bit too much pastiche. I'm sorry, but Gimme Shelter has to be No 1. Ever. All groups/artists counted.

Brown Sugar for me: The Muscle Shoals version is magic. The live versions are all very nice, but something is lost.

"bit too much pastiche" - you need to rethink that comment my dear LA Forum! And it's not like picking Start Me Up. In a way, you could argue that start me uses the same formula as HTW and BS etc, but HTW is the song that wrote the formula! When they release HTW, no-one had heard anything like it. The same could be argued about Gimme Shelter and JJF of course so I guess it comes down to personal taste - indeed, I might argue for Gimme Shelter or BS on another day depending on how I feel.

I still think that the original studio GS is by far the best version. Live versions with Taylor were excellent but the original song is just perfect.

"I still think that the original studio GS is by far the best version. Live versions with Taylor were excellent but the original song is just perfect."

Agree. They have performed it well live in 1972 and 1975 and maybe 1973 but that's it. And they never came close to the studio version.
