Great review PW - brings back some of the details that I had forgotten.

I got into the site after the Fratellis had already started (I thought they were great by the way) and only started trying to get towards the front after Keane had finished. No chance! On the way down, we bumped into something which looked a it like a B stage and, surprise surprise, it was. You just could not see that it was there from the back or anywhere more than about 15 rows back from it - and I'm 6'2"! (That's probably why so much of the crowd was so surprised.)

Once we were within a few rows of that stage there was no going forward so we settled to the fact that being close to the B stage was a good position. I've got to say that the runway didn't seem as long as in recent stadium gigs - was that your impression?

Probably Rough Justice, judging by the video and Keith's guitar.

In a text message I sent to various people in the early afternoon soon after we got in there, I said that I estimated the length as 50 to 60 metres, does that sound about right to you ?

We planned it like a military campaign.

Checked out the best route to FOS during Snow Patrol and Muse (far left, down by the disabled ramp, as it happens), and then sat in the shade watching it like a hawk and drinking cocktails, judging the crowds so we could still get right to the front without pushing folk out the way. There was a flood of folk to the toilets/bar during Paolo Nutini, so we ploughed down and got within about 10 rows of the front. The same happened after The Fratellis, and we were able to get about 3 folk from the rail/about 5 from the walkway.

Combined with a diet of immodium and malt whisky (rather than beer to avoid a retreat to the toilets), some fun inflatables and a crowd who were right up for it, its my personal fave Stones show for over 10 years.

One thing I would say, though, was that the volume for Snow Patrol and Muse seemed far louder. Maybe because we were closer to the centre/not direct in front of the speaker stack, but Muse, especially, were deafening. In contrast, I found myself thinking "Turn It Up" when Start Me Up began.

I didn't see fans supporting these silly prices, here. The only exeption i can remember is "glimmer twin 81". So, don't be so sarcastic...

(2) "Time for the band to see what they've been missing! An audience with some f**king energy. At last."

Agree. And this "at last" is 100% correct. It's not only about an audience with extremely high level energy. It's also about wining new fans. Because the Stones on stage have an incredible ability to win new fans.
I don't agree very often with LOGIE, but on this totally agree. I still enjoy the atmosphere in a "normal" Stones gig. During my 8 gigs in the last years (2003 and 2006), i have seen enthoustastic crowds and notable numbers of young people. Despite the prices. But things could be even better. Much better, perhaps.
I don't say that if they were reducing the prices at a 35% level, they would attract 35% more people. The whole thing doesn't work like that. But in this case, they could attract (let's suppose) 10% - 15% more people. Young people, basically. This fresh air would be enough to make the concerts wilder.

Mick, think about it. You have to estimate much more factors that M. Cohl do...

Thanks Paulywaul for the super pictures and report.

It is so satisfying to see how the band have impressed a new generation and look on course to have ironed out any glitches early doors of the tour.

Here's looking 4ward to the rest of the concerts.

BTW a colleague of mine at work told me today how his 21 year old son went to the IOW and was so impressed by the Stones. He asks for my guidance as to which CD his son should buy that epitomises their work over the years - as you will realise that's a real conundrum.

I then give him a 15 minute review of Out of our Heads, Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Exile, Sticky Fingers, Get Yer Ya Ya's, Tattoo You, Some Girls, Forty Licks etc etc - What do I tell him?

I suppose this just highlights why they are so special!

Strangely enough Baboon Bro I did tell him that that was the one which I would personally take on to the desert island. Sticky Fingers if I were not allowed a double LP/CD!

Yeah ... we tried !! I hope Schillid sees the ones in my review post, of Beast surrounded by all the youngsters. He should get a buzz out of that. To me, those two pics kind of encapsulate everything "the Stones at the Isle of Wight" was all about ... same band/different generations.

Hmmm..I do not often disaggree with the honorable Baboon Brother - but "Exile" is for the connisseur - not the newcomer. I had both "Exile" and "Sticky" in my possession for many a year without recognizing their greatness.....

If it has to be an album - rather start out on "Aftermath" and "Let It Bleed" for both the early and late 60's stuff - "Some Girls" for the 70's and "VL" for the 90's (perhaps throw in "Steel Wheels" for the 80's)

But why not let him start on a diet of "London Years" + "40 Licks" as starters? ;-)

No, start where their original teenage fans started, with some of the best 60s stuff! The London Years or Aftermath or even the first album would be good. It's got all the early energy and strangely enough it's now SO old that it sounds fresh again.

Driving back up the A3 on Monday I was playing 12x5 back to back with the Fratellis' album, and they made a very enjoyable pairing.

AAMOF (is there such a asdcronym, as a matter of fact) I believe we're
right both of us (glad to hear though ya often agree with me smiling smiley )
I was just thinking my first serious listening project was Exile.
But then again I was a severe rock freak before too.

Used all weekend as a backdrop during the day, then changed as the bigger acts came on, bringing their own stage-sets with them
