CHIMAY --- First Bleu (yesterday). Then Brune - my absolute favorite, then right now Triple. A good number two.

I miss Grand Place here at Vilvoorde but there are some guys arriving here every evening, making life easier to live without Grand Place.

The above is a "family picture" of the great Trappistes beers, i.e. the monestery - monk beers. Many many thanks to a great IORR member who kindy supplied these beers, so that they could be carefully tasted, in-between the rehersals.

Grand Place is on the UNESCO list, which means you have to visit it, take a beer, a waffle (with strawberries of course) and enjoy the life there. Whatever you do, wherever you go, Grand Place is important, well may be not as important as the Stones, but still...

The above is a typical Brussels Grand Place breakfast. It will cost you 20 Euro but it is all worth it. There are many restaurants and bars on Grand Place but for some reason I always return to LA CHALOUPE D'OR - a.k.a. DE GULDEN BOOT (Dutch/Flamish). Highly recommended - and if it full - it is always - just hang arounbd for 5-10 minutes, and you will have a table there, because nobody can afford to have numerous beers on Grand Place! By the way - LA CHALOUPE D'OR has got these beers (I have checked out them all): Kwak, Kriek, Affligem. Plus a few more.

Oh man, BV, I envy you the Affligem! That's my favourite beer in the world! Can't wait to have some when I'm in Paris for the show in a couple of weeks.

As for me, I'm sippin' on emptiness right about now . . .

Good choice with Chimay Blue..
Tried Achel yet, Bv? Or Vestvleeteren?

The Westvleteren beers are without labels, you know the shy "guys" in the 2nd row in the picture above. They were great. I liked the blond best. The Achel's are in the picture above and are still not opened. Will try them out tomorrow.

I think it is safe to say that Belgium is king of beers. No offense to Germany of course. They have more variety on the pilsner, love them too, but Belgium is - well - unique... PS. Oh yes I know where Pilzen is, but the Czech beers are not that unique. Sorry.

Did ya open the Achel-bottles, bv?
Now ya cannot ever drink Dahl's again...

Dahl's is absolutely forbidden in my house, to be honest. Worse than Ringnes. Don't even mention it. It is emotional and also taste wise but still I can't take Dahl's. Yes. I am working on the ACHEL Trappist now. The brune/bruin (8%) is great, may be slightly to bitter for me. Also checked out Kwak at Grand place. I will tell you that beer glass support is pretty unique, but if you look under it, just drink the beer from that unique glass that can't stand on it's own, you have one of the greatest beers in Belgium! I just love it.

PS. The IORR meeting place in Leuven near Wercther - Cafe de la Gare, Martelarenplein, Leuven, by the train station - has got four - 4 - trappist (monestery) beers plus many other Belgian beers of course. Highly recommended.

Kwak is wonderful! One of my absolute favorites!
Thank ya for reminding me! I drank Dahls at my uncle's 50th birthday party in Tröndelag & never never again.

And all ya good people: Don't forget Westmalle Tripel.
King & Queen & Emperor among beers...

You should try the Kwaks at the Dulle Griet in Ghent...1 liter, and you have to leave one of your shoes as security, in case you break the glass, cause it´s handmade. I used to work in Ghent for 7 months, so I pretty much tasted them all. Unbeatable. I find for the darker strong ones, that they go very well with a piece of belgian chocolate, preferably dark chocolate. Somehow it brings out even more taste.

I worked for Volvo there, lived in the center of town, in a hotel. Funny thing was when I told the hotelstaff that I was not coming back after 7 months, they said they would return to normal hours in the bar winking smiley
Visited a cool place where they made Kasteelbeer (spelling?).
It was a small castle surrounded by a moat. Me and my belgian boss was there to try theír local beer (very strong, something like 11%), that they brewed in the basement. So we´re sitting in the basement, looking out a window, that´´s placed approx 10 cm above the waterline of the moat. I´m getting a little drunk, and all of a sudden a BIG fish breaks the watersurface just outside the window, with his mouth wideopen. I nearly crapped my pants, and quickly moved one place away from the window... smiling smiley

Great story... I once heard a Norweigan chap talkin''bout a wet nite
when he and his pals had faced a circus with broken animal-wagons;
and they had led the elephants along the road with the rising sun in dawn
painting the elephants pink...

....Icehouse......okay, so Saturday I was at this big outdoor party...good food and nice people.....anyway, I took this jar of strawberry "brandy," which is really a nice way of saying "homemade moonshine." It is 190 proof (Erik can tell you about it)....and since I didn't want to have it in my van while driving out of there I left it with a friend at the party.....told her to keep whatever was left....but now I'm worried because she won't answer her phone.....should I call the morgue?....to see if they dragged her body in?
