Ice House? Yeah!

Ever been to an ice house? They are like an open-air barroom. They got 'em in southeast Texas. Weird liquor laws around there. Maybe someone else here knows more about them.

From Wikipedia:

In Texas, former ice houses are a cultural tradition, with many now converted into open-air bars. In the region of Central Texas and the Texas Hill Country, the word "ice house" has become a colloquialism for an establishment that derives the majority of its income from the sale of cold beer, particularly such locally-produced labels as Shiner Bock, Pearl, or Lone Star. One of the most famous is called "Ice Bar", located in downtown Austin.

Looks like Sohoe beat me to it!

Last time I was at an ice house was about 15 years ago in Houston. I arrived early to meet some friends and decided to find a bar to kill the time. I drove past this place that looked like a bar with no walls, which I suppose it is! Drank me a few Lone Stars and hung out with some really good folk.

......all I know is Icehouse means strong beer......though I am genuinely intrigued by this wall-less, law-less Texas drinking area of which you two describe

Well I just copied what was stated on Wikipedia. Never heard of Ice Houses before reading it here.

Sounds pretty good though.

Lukester, if you want lawless drinking, come on down here to New Orleans. It's wide open here 24/7!
You can buy beer & liquor at any corner store, and you can drink it on the street as long as it's in a plastic cup. Sundays, 6am, whenever. If you want to leave a bar before finishing your drink, tell 'em to put it in a "go-cup."

Some friends of mine recently went to the drag races in Baytown, just outside of Houston. It's not a dry county there, but you can only drink during certain hours on Sunday. It's our thing to get there early and pop a few beers before racing starts, figuring it's on private property so why not? WRONG! I'm glad I wasn't on that trip because everyone got a citation from local law enforcement!

....now you're scratching me right where I itch, Grover.....the "24/7, go-cup" drinking reminds me of a recurring dream I have in which I die (presumably from a malfunctioning liver), go to heaven, and drink 24/7 while stumbling through the streets of gold.....and the angels keep refilling my plastic cup!!!......it is just a dream though....here in NC we have those crazy laws about not buying alcohol before noon on Sunday (and some counties are dry).....(note to self: New Orleans is a good travel destination......levees are repaired.....ask for go-cups).....
