I always thought it sounds like Keys on Brussels, but it's been a year or two since I played it.
Wasn't the percussionist someone from Preston's band? Anybody have the Preston live w/Taylor album? Maybe there's a credit.
Finally, I trust little of Bockris' work. This goes back to '76, when he published an 'interview' with Burroughs in New York Arts Review (? - it was short lived) that included unattributed quotes from other sources (i.e. "The Job"). I know old Bill liked repeating himself, but it was over the top verbatim. Then some of the same material showed up in Victor's 'Bunker' book ("With William Burroughs"), inserted into supposed conversations with other artists/celebs taped at dinners, etc.

Yes Erik, that's right hahaha.......
I was actually listening to those Frankfurt shows just the other day and noticed that the sax solos on "Brown Sugar" and especially "Rip This Joint" didn't sound anything like solos that I'd heard Bobby play on those songs. So I figured he must have been gone by Frankfurt. So I'd say he was probably shipped off of the tour on Sept. 29, the day between the Munich and Frankfurt shows.

Yes - and it also make sense that the sax solos improved during October - quite funny - Madaio or Lawrence had to spend the afternoons learning Brown Sugar while on Stones tour

Steve Madeo certainly had a the best teacher for the Stones brass riffs, being member of Stevie's backup band in '72 and then the Stones in 1973.

But do we know conclusively what it was that caused Bobby to be jettisoned from the Europe 73 tour? I reckon it would have been Keith if anybody to tell him.

It was Bobby himself who decided to drop off of the tour.

Bobby says in his book.

I was at two shows in Bern, 25th and 26 september (late show) 1973. I think Bobby was on board, and we had only two brass players (though [www.discjapan.com] claims there were Madaio, Keys and Lawrence). The black man on percussion was Ollie Brown (not mentionned on discjapan.com).

Listening to all my bootlegs from Bern and other shows doesn't help me much, I'm not an expert for Saxophones (but I recognize Taylor on everything ;-).

According to Felix Aeppli (http://aeppli.ch/TUG08/CD1970-1973Up.pdf) the personnel for the Fall Tour in Europe 1973 was (the numbers refer to the standard setlist):

1-14: Percussion Ollie Brown;
1-4, 5, 6, 7-14: Keyboards Billy Preston and/or Ian Stewart;
1-5, 6a-8, 9a-12, 14: Saxophone Bobby Keys (all except last two shows)
and/or TrevorLawrence(some shows);
trumpet or trombone Steve Madaio

The last two shows would be Brussels (only second ??) and Berlin.

Thank you Meise for the link.

I googeled Manuel Kellough and found his homepage (http://www.mannykellough.com/the-deacons-chapter--verse.html), where he mentiones the Stones and his participation on the "Goat's Head Tour", He was with Billy Preston's God Squad on this tour. So probably no Ollie Brown ?.

It's all so long ago, and it is difficult to find accurate information.

In Bobby's book, he says that he left the 1973 tour after driving his car (with his family inside) into a river somewhere in Europe. That incident woke him up and made him realize that he needed to change. He says he left the tour for rehab (at Keith's expense - Keith: "Make it count" ).

The incident with more notoriety happened on the 1970 tour and cost him most of his tour money.

These are Bob's recollections. Keith tells it differently.

By the way, I highly recommend Bobby's book. The only problem with it is that it isn't longer.

More on Bobby Keys, may he RIP. This article also alludes to Keys being part of John Lennon's long lost weekend '73-'75.

Unfortunately, it's Buddy Lucas on "The Wanderer" and Boots Randolph on "Return to Sender." It makes me wonder if Bobby wasn't stretching the truth a bit about Buddy Holly taking him on the road, too. I'm afraid Bobby was a great storyteller as well as a great saxophonist.

Yeah it's the "bathtub filled with expensive champagne" incident that took place when keys tried to impress a French lady.

As far as the 73 tour is concerned Nick kent who covered most of the tour wrote in 94 that Keys and Keef were severely damaged by the heroin use. A big blow to the two men came with the news of the passing of Gram Parsons (19/9) which was announced right before the band was to give a show in Bern.

Acc. to Kent, a few days later a wrecked and unfunctional Keys was put in a taxi and "shipped home". So imho the sax player did leave the tour at the very end of September.
