Bonzo, Moon, Ringo, Topper Headon,Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, DJ Fontana, Jabo Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Mitch Mitchell,Neal Smith, Dennis Thompson, Jerry Nolan are on most lists but they would not count.
I like the guy from the Foo Fighters a lot. I guess Stewart Copeland has to be named. Chad Smith from the Chili Peppers is great. Paul Thompson from the Old School. Stephen Perkins. Joey Kramer has actually become a pretty good rockdrummer.

Best active drummer, other than Charlie? Number two on my list is Clem Burke from Blondie. He plays like Keith Moon. His drumming on 'Union City Blues' is fantastic. Plus he's one of the niceist guys you'll ever meet.
As Chelsea already stated, I'd have to go with Stewart Copland. I always enjoyed Bill Kreutzman from The Grateful DEad...I always thought they sounded better with one drummer.
Paul Thompson of Roxy Music- lol Chelsea...although not on the current Bryan Ferry tour, he played with Roxy Music during their Summer 2003, 2005 gigs and drummed on Phil Manzanera's "50 minutes later" in the same year. He only didnt play last year with Roxy because of an injury...he played last December with Chris Spedding's band too.
Other than that i think everyone has covered most of the "greats" if you will. i think alot of the new "guitar bands" (guys with funny fringes and tight jeans) drummers are generic and unoriginal compared to the drummers on this thread...
Casino Boogie said something that hit home with me. At first when I was posting for this thread I thought that maybe I was wrong - there are almost too many redhot drumers around today. But they are all,the same; they are really not original. It has become like with guitarists today - it is very easy to get a big f/x board with a bunch of presets, a Les paul and a Marshall . learn to play the fifths on the low strings and some Berry licks and YOU ARE ready. I saw Wilco a few years back with a young drummer who played like a Gospel drummer. Incredible! I don't know if he is still with them.

I agree with you. Was playing Magic from the album of the same name tonight. He is the best drummer ever. I got all his LP,s. Also checkout Spectrum. He sounds like his was born with ten arms and legs.
Zak Starkey is truly excellent. Jason Bonham..? I saw an episode of some soap opera type deal where they are trying tp put a band together in a Real TV deal with him and the singer of Skid Row, Ted Nugent and others. One whiner bigger than the other.

In my humble opinion, it is difficult to judge most active rock drummers today because so much of their playing has been doctored in the studio. Almost all metal drummers are all about beating the hell out of their drums rather than actually playing them... Charlie has gotten lazy over the years, but at least he's still sounding like a real drummer.
Then there are the obnoxious double-kick-happy drummers out there, trying to sound like Bonham still, but failing dismally, sounding instead like a robot or a flat tire on the interstate.
I like almost all Jim Keltner's playing. I like the drummer for Kings of Leon, and Wilco's drummer, too. Nothing revolutionary out there in the rock world, though. Also agree w/ all the above mentions of Zak Starkey. He does a good KM.
I have to agree about, Billy Cobham, Zak Starkey, and Simon Phillips. They are all excellent. I've seen all four from very close, but to me, there is no doubt that Peart is the man.
Saw him last week at the two "38th Anniversary" shows the Q did in Northampton.
They did two sets each night--the first one with the great Al Anderson on guitar, and the second with Johnny Spampinato (with Al joining in at the end)
Imagine seeing a Stones concert with two versions of the band playing--one set with Taylor, the other with Woody....
Ardolino rocks...he swings... he is the heartbeat of the greatest live band on the planet!
