What to do in Saint Denis before the Show
Posted by: drbryant ()
Date: May 4, 2007 19:06

I'll be meeting a friend at CDG airport on the morning of the show, and we plan to line up around 3:00 p.m. or so. I don't really feel like going into the city that morning -- is there anything to see/do nearer to the Stadium? or between the Airport and the Stadium?

You can go to the Saint Denis cathedral where the french kings are buried.
Nice but short visit.

there's got to be an airport bar, right? or duty free liquor store?

hi drbryant...the area between the train and the stadium is filled with large office buildings and there are a couple of non-descript restaurants (i didn't know about the cathedral - it must be a good walk from the train-stadium corridor).

the last two shows they played there, i went at about 3pm and got front rail, but down the side - no where near the catwalk - so that might help you decide how much time you have.

there are two RER trains to st. denis from the gare de nord - one takes you right next to the station and the other takes you further away and adds about 10-15 minutes to the walk. i can't remember which is the one close by.

also, if you use a train pass for multiple rides within paris, the turnstyle at st. denis will not let you though because the town is outside paris. lots of people make the mistake so you're left with jumping the turnstyle or relying on a nice train employee to open the gate for you, so you may want to make sure you buy the right kind of ticket.

Really, there is nothing to do in Saint-Denis itself. Take the RER and take a short walk in downtown Paris.

take the metro (line 8?) to Lachaise and see this wonderfull graveyard. Get in touch with Jim Morrison, Edith Piaff.
Don`t forget to take some food for the cats. After this silent oase you are in the right mood to get the bigger bang.

Thanks for all the advice. Given the options, I think we'll head into the city after all.

LOL - arriving at CDG airport in paris is always a trip for me because everyone is smoking as they wait for their luggage!

Why don't you go into Paris, visit the Musee D'Orsay ...enjoy the art, the fabulous light and their great restaurant for a late lunch?

It will get your blood circulating after the flight and put you in a very up mood for the show.

It would be a shame to just hang at the airport or in the less than uplifting area around the stadium.

"No Anchovies, Please"

I'm telling you: try and make it to the city center, if it were only to walk some meters on the Champs Elysées... SEE something... the Opera, Louvre, Ile de la Cité seen from the Seine banks, Notre Dame... Grab a drink and a sandwich somewhere, even if it is only one, and return to the stadium as late as possible. Breathe Paris, even if it's a short walk from subway/Champs Elysées, around the Notre Dame and back to the subway...

saint denis is not a happy place . . .hence the car-torching remark. for the love of god, go into paris beforehand instead. (that's where i'm staying, and i won't be going up to the SDF until fairly late.)

I would do that. I engaged with my ex-ex there.

You should go to the macdonalds near the stadium, it's the only thing around. I think that says it all

Full-day in Paris: Pain riche Bread & paté in some park.
Coffe at C. Elysses, or - more wallet-friendly - some
back street west of L'Arc du la Triomphe. Walk along River Seine.
Go to the Eiffel Tower, take the stairs to 2nd 'floor'.

Dine at Brasserie Lipp, St-.Germain. Or Pizza Hut nearby Les Halles.
Go & listen to the eminent street musicians just there.

A trip to Pèré Lachaise & Morrison's tombstone.

Up to Sacre Coëur if ya got the time. Walk around
Montmartre, a beer or four.

A hot day you can chill at the 'pools' in front of
the E. Tower.

This - or at least similar - I have done dozens of times.

The pont behind the Centre Pompidou is certainly something I forgot to mention in my earlier post...

there's also plenty of shopping (but not much to eat) in the gare du nord train station!

i find that station to be very confusing with all the different types of trains that go through there. allow time to get lost and if you need to buy a reservation for a train, good luck. you'll wait in line forever.

there's a good indian food restaurant across the street from gard du nord - and some internet points too.
