In fairness, I dont think mick really looks back at any tour with any kind of nostalga or reverence for it. It is kind of weird, but he does that with every tour. I dont think 78 is any more overlooked than the other ones. I guess its his way of moving on, being ready for the next thing.

Yes, well put, Chelsea - I think it's silly to compare 78 to 75, as their attitude was quite different in 75 than in 78. 1975 might be the tour I enjoy the most listening to, but I'm really glad they didn't try to keep up with that style....well in one way they did, in 76.
1978 style and energy...as you say...is timeless.

The '78 tour holds a special place in my heart, for a couple of reasons. In 1978, I was playing in a club band that did a tour of the south and midwest. When the tour opened in Lakeland FL, it just so happened that my band was in Naples FL for a week-long engagement. Also, "Miss You" was on the airwaves, and we prided ourselves on learning a BRAND NEW Stones song.

A couple of years later, I got a copy of "Out On Bail", and loved it. Later, I got "Garden State '78". In just the last couple of years, I finally got a copy of "Handsome Girls", and I frankly think that the Detroit and Houston tracks blow the Passaic tracks out of the water.

I also got the six available videos from the Ft. Worth show, and they are great. Didn't get to see the band live till December 1981, but the summer of '78 was something special.

Jaw-dropping slow blues action in Buffalo

when madman Mick would jump way up in the air durin " Love in Vain " curl & pull his legs into his chest , sorta like a human ball , & then at the Same Moment Keef hit that abrupt " Stop Dead " chord , Jagger's feet would land on the stage , grrrrrreat stuff by da glimmer twins there

From Rolling Stone Mag. i think

The version of Satisfaction from Okland is way cool. Also, IMO, the version of Tumbling Dice from Memphis(?) is the best they ever did, especially the extended end of it. On of the better tours, and we're so lucky to have the exellent documentation (Handsome Girls) of it -probably the best sounding Stones boot there is...

I love every tour that the Stones have made but I believe 1978 is the best. It rocks hard, Mick gets loose for once, using profanity in between songs which make the shows sound real and wild. That's is rock and roll, baby

I used to have Garden State 78 and that is a great boot. I was at both '78 Anaheim shows and those were my first two live shows as well. Day 1 sucked compared to day 2, which was the "shoe" show. It was like two different shows. Day 1 was sloppy and it seemed like the band didn't care. In fact, they were so late to arrive, there was a 3 hour wait between the last opener and the Stones. Day 2, they rocked the house down at the Big A.

Anybody else notice that the magazine article referred to Earl Mcgrath as the Earl of McGrath?

Wasn't this also the last tour in which Chuck Berry covers were in every setlist?

The opening number, which is still my favorite, was "Let It Rock", and in most (if not all) shows they also did "Sweet Little Sixteen".

I suppose it was. Unless "Little Queenie" has been a regular part of any of the modern era setlists. I know they've played it quite a bit but I don't know if it was ever a regular part of the set for any of the post-Steel Wheels tours.

This is also the only tour in the '69-'82 period where they didn't follow up the American Tour with a European Tour the following year. I guess it had to do with Keith's legal problems.

Does anyone remember this very bizarre move that Jagger did ONLY on the 78 tour? It wasn't one of his sexy, ultracool moves. It was like a very geeky kind of walk he did. He would hike up his pantlegs with his fingers, then spread his legs like a puppet or marionette and kind of stalk in this abrupt crowlike walk around the stage. I think he does it very quickly in the SNL show.
78 was my first show and when I saw him do that it was a major headscractcher. Here was my alltime hero and I was expecting...you know the Jagger Bump'n Grind, man. He was doing this; and it was the coolest. Because he was outpunking all the punks.

theres another move from 78 that I like that I dont think is the same as what chelsea is talking about. He would run in place but his legs were spread apart and he brought his knees up really high. He did it a little bit in 81 but it wasnt as crazy looking. The first time I saw it was on the SNL when they did 'beast'. My first thought was that he must have learned that from Bob Marley, who was really peaking in popularity at that time. Another example of Mick incorparating other artists moves into his own stage act. It was really cool to me.

No Ryanpow, that is exactly the one!! In Philly he would just do it in place. By the time I saw them in NYC he was running all over the stage like that LOL.

My first Stones show was Oakland 78, Mick's birthday. The crowd was getting restless, because they were 2.5 hours late. Word had it that they were still in LA when show was supposed to start. But as soon as Let It Rock started, we forgave them. Mick went to piano for great Love In Vain. He was a dancing fool on birthday No. 35.

Great bootleg: Capitol Theater, Passaic. N.J. 6-14-78. Stu cooks on Sweet Little 16.
