Midnight Rambler is the Rolling Stones "Signature Song".

It iconified the late 1960's.

I get chicken skin every time in concert when the lights turn blue and the instrumental noodling begins, and then WHAM! Mick busts out the harp to the opening chords...

But Glimmer, if you're sick of Midnight Rambler, no problem...I'm sick of the songs "Miss You", Honky Tonk Woman" & Start Me Up... do I hate them? No, just heard them too many times...

MR is a showstopper you are right
but not in the way the BIZ understands that

watch the stadium crowd when they play start me up
and then watch it when they play MR

and the only thing the stones still can give an audience is a good
show and make the audience have fun and they should stop annoying the people
with semi warhorses like that, that 89 % of a stadium crowd even do not know

so the whole do not play warhorses discussion where pepole say the stones should not play the songs everybody knows but have to play fukkin MR is dumb cause 95% of a stones stadium crowd wanna hear that and that is what the stones have to give

the times of great playin music are over (except for mick)
but i do not blame them for that
that's what you expect these days at a stones concert
and it is funny in a way that the guitarists of the greatest rock band of all time
can not play a single song without 50 mistakes but still sound cool and amazing

And me ol mucker Glimmer. With comments like "this is over like brian jones" you prove yourself once again.

I'm sure if you run around the playground a bit more (probably on your own I'd guess) the Sunny D your mum packed for your lunch will wear off?????

With those riffs MR is a sure-fire concert hit and it's a song that does not stretch the band's abilities to be exciting and effective. But what they are doing with it cheapens this classic. It has taken the place of OOC in the setlist for cueing the audience with flashing lights and Jagger's epileptic seizure dance. It's another massive dose of audience pandering like many other of the "warhouses" in the "give 'em what they want" show.

I prefer the performance and tempo of the '69 -'70 versions when they did not have club the audience over the head with it.

So audience recognition makes it a better song?

By your logic, if they played Karma Chameleon or Stayin Alive, it would be better than almost any Stones song.

utter bullshit of the highest order.

>and
the only thing the stones still can give an audience is a good
show

ever seen the Stones in a theatre setting? Your comment above proves that youre talking out of the wrong orifice.

>and make the audience have fun and they should stop annoying the people

89%??? Where do you pluck these magical figures from?

>so the whole do not play warhorses discussion where pepole say the stones should not play the songs everybody knows but have to play fukkin MR is dumb cause 95% of a stones stadium crowd wanna hear that and that is what the stones have to give

oh its up to 95% now!! When did these opinion polls take place?

You've never heard a great version live? Seriously?

MR with Taylor Vibrato ,glistens to the heavens against Keith's rhythm attack.

MR with Wood in charge is hard to swallow

Think you need to re-read that

"Ive YET to hear one that I DIDNT think was great" indicates that every version I've heard has been great,.....

the Brussels 73 version is the greatest live performance of any song in their entire career...and the YaYas version is the best thing they have ever released officially IMO, with the probable exception of Gimme Shelter...

so..I kinda like it... smiling smiley

audience recognition makes it a better song, yes for sure
no need to see the stones playin in front of a silent audience

Gazza you must be kiddin if you think the stones are on earth to bring
anything but a bit of entertainment to people

and you can be sure that most people attending a stones show do not know MR

most people there know satisfaction and brown sugar
they might know some other melodies but for sure not the name of the songs

Don't underestimate the power of Forty Licks... A great double album for the non-fans, for no more than 15 euro's already soon after its release. Many many people have bought it just because it is an album one needs to have. (Like Clapton Unplugged or many best offs). Many many people who bought tickets to the Stones bought 40licks 'on the way home'. Or they downloaded the songs. And NO, there is no Midnight Rambler on 40 licks, but it features easily more than 50% of each ABB setlist.

I've refrained from joining this discussion so far because I keep telling myself that the original poster is a 13 year old from Peoria, IL (apologies to resident Peorians). He is SO proud that this thread is approaching 5 pages.
