whats everybodies opinion on "shattered"

i think the studio version on "some girls" is weakly arranged and dosent do the song justice.

the live version on "still life" is great, and proves that this song has potential to be reguarded a classic.

imagine how good it would be if recorded around the time of "sticky fingers" or "exile" and had the same sound and recording quality as these albums had.

a missed oportunity for the stones i think.

>whats everybodies opinion on "shattered"

its pretty close to perfect, and no live version has ever equalled it

Thats an interestuing take on it. I cant even imagine that song being from any other album or period. Its really one of the most unusual songs they've done. IMO the some girls version is perfect. It has this really cool minimalist sound. gitaurs part gets under your skin, Micks voice is great.

I don't really care for the studio version that much. The flat backing vocals are pretty weird. I've heard lots of powerful live versions that I liked though.

They recorded 20 versions of it, just to make sure about the perfection...

Handsome Girls versions smokes, without surpassing the studio version...both of them are thick smoke from the fiery Stones camp

I have heard only 2 or 3 versions and so far I like the studio best.

At the 1994 New Orleans show, Mick altered the words a bit and sang "to live in this DUMP, you must be tough...." This was after spending a few days off from the tour in N.O. including taking part in a second-line parade in the city.

Mick is known for switching up lyrics, but was this example a dig at N.O.?

i never get sick of it.

sometimes live the sound bounces around too much and muddles it up - the best version i've heard live was a radio city music hall last year...

Classic Stones, for me the '78 versions are the best.

And, I am glad they did not do this during Sticky Fingers--think it is much better with Ronnie than it would have been with Mick T--actually feel that way about the entire Some Girls record.

Perfectly captures NYC in the late '70's and to an extent is still eblematic of it today. One of the best NYC songs ever written.

is that the one with Mick doing all that "can y'all do a rebel yell real good" patter beforehand? I think its from Memphis. Thats a great version - but for different reasons than the studio recording.

I love the studio version....the only live version I heard was on Handsome Girls and I thought the studio version was much, much better.....I still remember the first time I heard it....there was a guy I went to school with named "Flat Top".....I didn't even know Mick knew Flat Top.....from then on I would let Flat Top copy my homework

I know a kareoke bar that has Shattered. I reeally want to try it some time. Thats one of those songs that you do and then just fall over off the stage when your done.

Yes, that's one of them, there's 3 versions on Handsome Girls.
ANd yes, it has a different vibe than the studio version.
Just like Beast Of Burden...the studio take is a different song than the live version. Mick sounds almost sarcastic on stage in 78/81/82...it's still excellent, though.

in a word: damn near perfection.

ok, that was three words. but the point still stands!

LOVE the studio version

And I've never heard them play the rhythm guitar the way it is on the record.

It's hard for me to describe... KR seems to play an extra note in the riff... Anyone know what I'm referring to?

Bury it (& Miss You and Tumbling Dice along with them for that matter) at least as far as playing it/them live goes.

This song never really grabbed me. I mean I used to like it for it's comical value - but it's hardly an 'amazing' song. Kind of a throwaway which many fans ate up with grapes - now it's a 'legend'.

The live versions are better - an excuse for Jagger to spaz right out - which is a good thing. I like the bridge in the song. I dunno... maybe if you're American, especially a New Yorker it might mean something more.

You mean, it's a terrific song, which some people just don't grasp.

The studio version is so dated, almost to the point of being embarrasing.

The live renditions are simply laborious, tuneless and tedious, and a waste of a song in an already limited setlist.
