Taylors best solo
Date: March 7, 2007 14:37

I keep getting caught by surprise with Taylor. Just when i thought i had heard them all, there he goes again and catches me unawares.

Yesterday it was Sympathy on ya yas, last week it was angie odeon 73, the week before it was.... and so on.

Does anyone else suffer from this? Is there a cure?

I would vote for "Dancing with Mr. D" from Brussels 1973 for Taylor's best solo.

As for your cure I would recommend getting out to see more live shows. A lot of great guitarists out there - some touring right now:

Allman Brothers = Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks
Eric Clapton = Clapton, Trucks, Doyle Bramhall
The WHO = Pete Townsend
Widespread Panic = Jimmy Herring

And many others.....some not so famous.

His most outstanding solo is on "Time Waits For No One". As far as live recordings are concerned I'd vote for Midnight Rambler 1973.

Best studio solo: Sway

Best live solo: Any Love In Vain or YCAGWYW from 72/73

Street Fighting Man - Ya Ya's (New York '69)

Gimme Shelter - London, Sept. 9, 1973. Rock music's fineste hour, IMHO. The "momentum", or whatever one should call it, in Taylor's solo is the finest hour of this finest hour!

Meise - Nice call here. I've only recently fallen in love with this song mostly because his solo. He's got so many phenominal one's it's hard to pick a favorite.

It's been beaten to death here before, but his live work on Sway, guesting with Carla Olsen at the Roxy in 199???? is out of this world fantastic. Have you heard it?

Take your pick, but the point is: After all these years it's music still worth listening to...closely. I am grateful that the booters have preserved so many of these shows.

Best? Who knows? There's lots of them. But my fav is the Brussels TD. Who'da thunk that there could be a groove within a groove and that it could swing and be so exciting? That performance is like a symphony. It's thrilling.

No, I haven't heard it yet. Is someone there who wants to share it?
And yeah, you're right. MT had so many outstanding moments that it's really heard to pick just one fav.

There's a momment on YCAGWYW from NYC 72 Mick b-day 7/26 when you think the solo is over and MT goes up an octave and keeps jamming. It's brilliant.

Yes, all of his YCAGWYW solos from 72 were absolutely amazing. I think I prefer his playing in 72 - slightly more restrained and, dare I say it, tasteful... (as I quickly duck before the stones get thrown in my general direction).

Live: by far, really really by far: Gimme Shelter, Wembley 9.9.1973. Second would be Heartbreaker from the same show. Third: most of Brussels...

Studio: I don't think the studio is where Taylor really shined with the Stones. But if I had to choose, it would Jiving Sister Fanny, Sway and Winter.

YCAGWYW -Fort Worth 1972

Three Words: Love In Vain

A few more words: Any live version will do)

And to round it out: it may not be his most technically astounding solo, but there's something about the emotion captured that really makes it spectacular.

Gimme Shelter - Philly '72

For the studio stuff, I'm partial to the wah-fest on 100 Years Ago, and I've been recently rediscovering the big one that's often taken for granted - the CYHMK jam.

My favorite was always If You Really Want To be My Friend.
As are most things in life, it's got a great beginning, middle, and ending.
True, he did shine better live with the Stones than he did in the studio.

Yeah, Zack, it is.

<<Gimme Shelter - Philly '72>>

Yeah, that would be one of many picks. The 7/21, 1st, performance is killer.
