A Nearly-Forgotten Favorite: Black Oak Arkansas

Way back in the dark ages of 1973, a favorite album of mine was "Raunch n Roll...Live". This is Lynyrd Skynyrd in an alternate universe. Three lead guitars, a hotshot drummer (Tommy Aldridge), and a truly bizarre lead vocalist (Jim "Dandy" Mangrum).

I'd lost it for them by the time "Jim Dandy" was released, but these guys were fun while it lasted.

My fave song: "Hot n Nasty". A hillbilly rave-up. They just replaced banjos and fiddles with guitars. I still love it.

I bought the High on the Hog album on vinyl a couple of years back, but the music never really got to me. Maybe I should give them a second chance...

Funny, I just asked on Hot Stuff a few weeks ago if anyone had Jim Dandy that they could post. Nobody did so please consider this another request.

(On a sad note, Ruby Star passed away not long ago. Apparently she was quite a fixture of the music scene in Milwaukee>)

Gotta say the boys did put out a few clunkers.....but, also some really interesting stuff - the afore-mentioned Raunch and Roll is a cool live album - "Hot Rod", "Hot And Nasty", "When Electricity Came To Arkansas", and, of course "Mutant Of The Monster" (with that bizarre introduction).

Really like "Uncle Lijah" from the first album too. Not for everybody, but lots of fun.

Jim Dandy's influence on the dress of David Lee Roth and the vocals of Axl Rose is very obvious.

First band I saw when I was a wee lad in Sheboygan. Jim Dandy is still doing shows but now wears a cumberbund/girdle. Ouch

They were a good band! They got a little "old" after a while and glam rock made them look like dinosaurs a few years later.

Speaking of geat/fun forgotten bands Whaddabout Jo Jo Gunne !?!?!

I noticed this, too. Ol' Jim Dandy has his place in the rock vocalist pantheon.

friend of mine worked 4 a staging co. back then so i got free tics 2 all da gigs he worked ,seen 5 B. Oak shows, dey were very good but besides dat Jim Dandy was a " groupie magnet " so da scenery was very lovely & erotic

pretty sure he's about 2 land on his jewels in pic, he usually did ballcrusher splits @ all their gigs , maybe dis influenced Jagger 2 do da splits he did on da 78 tour
check out da old fashioned Whiskey Jugs on da drum riser

I think I actually saw them open for Aerosmith or Blue Oyster Cult or somebody like that many years ago at the Cow Palace. Don't remember much about the show. But for some reason, I vaguely remember the billing.

Tommy Aldridge is an awesome drummer! I first got into him when he was with the Pat Travers band (Boom Boom Out Go The Lights). He then joined Ozzy's Blizzard of Oz. Imagine him and Randy Rhoads on guitar in concert! He then replaced the legendary Cozy Powell in Whitesnake. Saw him a couple times with them. Great drum solos playing with his hands. Must get sore hands slapping the cymbals.

Saw them in about '73 opening for Black Sabbath. As a hairy teenager I found them entertaining. According to the music press at the time, Jim Dandy used to boast that his pants were so tight, you could see what religion he was!

saw them at the California Jam...Wath was their hit at the time? Jim Dandy..

I remember this girl wearing very short shorts doing their chorus..She was very hot for the teenager I was then.

I was dumb enough as a high school senior to drive 400 miles out of my way on the way to Florida for spring break to go to Black Oak Arkansas...YES!! THERE IS SUCH A PLACE!! Nothing to see there but I still have a picture of the water tower with big "BLACK OAK" letters on the side. Nobody played lead washboard like Jim Dandy!

The firs t article I ever read on them was in Creem. Talked about that band deciding magnamously to donate something from their stageshow(?) or albumcovers (?) to a local museum. The museum turned them down in horror LOL.

s & c,

A friend of mine was such a fan that he went to Black Oak on his honeymoon! Met Jim's parents and sister. Later, he became friends with Jim and Ricky Reynolds (one of the guitar players). Hearing his wife tell this story is hilarious!

WOW, Creem Magazine! I still have a pile of them, preserved in clear sleeves, many with Mick on the cover! How about Parade,& Hulabaloo Magazine, from the same time period-- early 70's.

Hit Parader was one my favorites as it had the words to the songs.

Isn't Hit Parader still around? I am glad that hi quality Rock Mags have made a comeback. Now there's a bunch of'em again.
