Oh, no, not this clishe again... They were both and they still are both. Just because R 'n R always had -and has- two hypostases. Music and music industry, passion and money. Simple as that. Let's face it. The "years of the innocence" is childish part of the R'R mythology- nothing more. There are 100,000 examples around...

If there is a "cliche" at work here then it is the term "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World" and the Stones as a live act. The fact of the matter is the musical force that is the Rolling Stones as a live band has been diluted by the trappings of success, over production, too many backing musicians and sadly complacency. The raw power of the stripped down version of the band has been lost in all of aforementioned and is something I would love to hear again, but is now only available on live recordings of yore.

Not true that they have to rely on backing singer etc, what about the B stage set that they do, that's the best part of the show, just the five of them.

I never wrote that they had to rely on backup muscians, only that they do. The B stage portion of their shows is my favorite part as well!

The classic-era Stones are untouchable. From 1969-1978, you can't get a better live band for rock'n'roll.

I was 16 when I saw them in 1989 - already past their prime by a decade, yet still quite a show. I remember paying a whopping $36.00 for my ticket! It was shocking that a ticket would cost more than a record!

With such a back catalogue since the Sixties - so many great songs over such a long decade - no band can compete with that.
They invented stadium rock - so many big tours, high ticket prices.
Keith surviving heroin, alcohol, accidents; Mick the best frontman.
