OT: The Police at $235?

The Police are touring North America this Spring/Summer. A good band in their day. Good musicians, witty, insightful, fun. I have a chance to see them in Toronto, but tix are $235 each. It's in an 18,000 seat indoor arena, and $235 is the top-priced ticket. Balcony tix will be $90, I'm told.

Am I just living wayyyyyyy in the past for thinking that anything over $75 is a huge price for a concert...especially in a large venue?

The Stones for $160 Canadian (about $130 US at the time) in 2005 was a huge amount...and that was in a 50,000 seat covered stadium. Top ticket I believe was $350. The Who were getting $200+. Is it just me, or have older bands gotten wildly greedy?

umm the latter, quite unfortunately.......

That said, for the extra 75 dollars I would trade the 75,000 seat barn for the relatively intimate 18,000 seat venue.

MSG--8/1 and 8/3---wanna bet it is a COMPLETE sell out?

Wow,that just seems way overpriced. You have to think that they did some kind of marekt research that says they can get that kind of price. But I guess time will tell.

When I was in college, the Police were scheduled to perform in our cafeteria in 1978, with a great band named XTC. It was $6. I still have the poster.

Unfortunately, they cancelled when they got stuck at the border getting into the states.

28 years later I have a chance to see them again. But I'm debating the principle of anyone charging $235 for an arena show.

(Though as a broke college student...the $6 was a lot for me in 1978...I'd have had to skip eating for a day so I would have had enough money for beer and the concert)

The other ticket above -- the one from 1981 -- is from a concert at Liberty Bell Park -- which is a horse racing track in northeast Philadelphia. I think it's called Philadelphia Park now.

The Police were at the top of a bill that included Oingo Boingo, The Go-Go's, and maybe one more act I can't recall.

Was wondering about that---had never heard of Liberty Bell Park (Now that's a Philly name!) and am somewhat familiar with the city.

Bet the '81 show was alot better than '83........

Is it possible that if an overpriced POLICE tour does not come close to selling out...that it could send a message to the industry? What size venues?

I like THE POLICE but I won't go. I don't think I'd go if tix topped out at $100.

Other than the Stones & U2, what bands have successfully sold $200+ tickets?

Positive factors to consider..1) tons of hype 2) nostalgia 3) some great tunes 4) last opportunity?.

Negative factors to consider..1) over-hyped 2) Sting has become an easy listening artist 3) not enough great tunes 5) i'll just buy the $20 dvd and watch it on my big plasma screen with my friends.

IORR............but I like it!

I'd go for around $100. I'm sure they won't sell out the expensive $200+ tix.

I wouldn't pay 450 to see the Stones last year because I thought that was to much.I will be damned if I would pay 200 to see the guys. h

I likeD the Police too... And I wouldn;t pay much to see them either. If I went at all... I've come to dislike Sting's solo stuff and his whole persona. Makes them reuniting seem phony somehow.

I have paid the police way more than $235 over the years, and those @#$%& never once so much as sang me the chorus of Roxanne. At least they don't charge as much as the judges. I fought the law and did not even get a receipt.

Way to expensive for a b-class band. I saw them in 81 at the LA Forum it was OK. Nothing great. I can't see them filling up stadium's. If they do that will blow my mind. I don't know if zeppelin could fill stadium's,at this point.

You don't think "Zeppelin" could fill a stadium?

Umm, think again......

What up Skelter? It's been a little while, huh? Yea glad were on the same page here? I just can't imagine this whole police thing. Plus i can't stand STINK! What an ego,and bailing out on them in 84,this is obsurd imo. I hope the ticket sales are very slow and the promoter eat's it,i thiught it was cohl but i guess it is''''''''''nt.

Well Plant and page are basically zepelin now imo. I'''''ve been seeing them for 30 year's that is Page's and plant and all there other thing's. I saw page and plant in 98 and they only did Irvine meadow''s two night's which i think is 18,000. I don't know if they could do it. Plus i would not want to hear page in a football stadium you would lose a lot of tone man.

Freak--quick question, what do you suppose might have happened to the Stones if Mick's, ahem, "solo" career had been anywhere near, and I mean anywhere, as successful as Stings as opposed to landing with one of the biggest thuds of the 1980's?

(btw, I despise, universally Sting's slol career--but that ain't the point of the question)

It was''nt,so i don't have to surmise, but i think he would of been back with the stones anyway you look at it.

Perhaps. Fortunately, we will never know. There is certainly an argument to be made that it would have gone quite differently if he experienced any success on the solo level.

He was essentially MIA for parts of Undercover and most of Dirty Work due to his solo career. He refused at least one and possibly two tours cause of his solo career. He then, in fact, did tour solo; pushed Keith into doing something he really did not want to; launch his own solo career.

Not sure it is as clear cut as "any way you look at it" there certainly was a fair amount of action (and inaction) to suggest a different outcome was possible.

Keith, rather famously was not sure Steel Wheels was going to happen, hence the "2 days or 2 weeks" comment to his wife.

Again, fortunately, we will never know.
